Chapter 1

The sound of Disturbed’s Perfect Insanity woke Christopher Daniels out of a sound sleep. He sat up in bed turning on the bedside lamp. Across the room AJ Styles stirred in his bed, groaning as the room was suddenly illuminated.

"Who the hell is callin’ you at three o’clock on the morning," AJ groaned, pulling the pillow over his head.

Daniels swiped up his phone and checked the caller ID. "I don’t know. I don’t recognize the number." He swung his legs over the edge of the bed and answered the call.

"Is this a Mr. Christopher Daniels," a very serious sounding woman asked.

"Yes," Daniels replied. He had no idea why, but he felt the dread building inside of him.

"Sir, my name is Theresa. I’m calling from St. Regents Medical Center," the woman replied. "Your listed as the next of kin for a Constance Daniels."

"That’s my sister," he said standing. AJ heard the words and removed the pillow from his head, sitting up. "What happened?"

"She was beaten pretty badly."

"Is she…"

"She’ll recover," Theresa replied.

"It was her boyfriend." It was statement not a question. "Is she pressing charges?"

"No, sir. She declined."

"Could you get a message to her? Let her know I’m coming to see her. Tell her not to worry I’ll handle everything." With that he hung up the phone and scrubbed a hand down his face.

"Is Connie all right?" Daniels frowned and shook his head no. "Need me to drive," AJ offered. He knew his friend was in no condition to drive and didn’t want him getting into a wreck on the way to take care of his sister.

"You shouldn’t, AJ," Daniels sighed after a few minutes of silence.

"Connie’s like family, Chris," AJ replied standing and pulling on a pair of jeans. "You’re too worried to drive. I can see it written all over your face."

"The fucker beat the shit out of my sister," Daniels replied finally filling AJ in on what had happened. "Something tells me that it’s not the first time too. She won’t press charges against the prick."

"She’s probably terrified of the guy. Get dressed. Standing here talking about it isn’t helping your sister." Daniels nodded, grabbing clothes to throw on.

Twenty minutes later they were on the road to the hospital. Daniels nervously drummed his fingers on his knees as they rode in silence. AJ glanced at his friend and sighed.

"Chris, she’ll be all right," he reassured.

"Physically yes, AJ," Daniels replied softly. "Who knows how long this bastard’s been doing this to her."

AJ didn’t know how to respond to this statement. In all the years that he’d known Christopher Daniels and his little sister Constance he’d never seen his friend so worried. He glance at him as Daniels continued to drum his fingers against his legs.

"Chris, we’ll get there as soon as possible," AJ said hoping he would stop.

Daniels groaned, a hand running over his bald head. "I should have known something was wrong," he muttered.

"What do you mean?"

"Connie always calls at least once a week," Daniels replied. "Those calls stopped almost two months ago. She knew. She knew I’d be able to tell something was wrong."

"You’re jumping to conclusions, buddy."

"AJ, I know my sister. She can’t hide anything from me," Daniels said shaking his head when AJ opened his mouth to speak. "I would have known."

"I believe you," AJ said when Daniels finally quieted. "Look, just try not to think the worst. For all we know she’s a little banged up. We’ll go see her and make sure things are all right."

Daniels punched the dashboard, startling AJ. He hadn’t been listening to a word his friend had said.

"Could you refrain from scaring the shit out of me while I’m driving," AJ grumbled. "I know you’re upset, Chris, but this isn’t helping Connie."

"Why wouldn’t she press charges?"

"Maybe she’s scared," AJ offered. "You said that he had to have been doing this to her for a while." AJ cringed realizing the words would only upset Daniels more. "We can speculate all we want, but we won’t know for sure until we talk to Connie. So, just calm down so we don’t get into a damn accident."

"I’m sorry," Daniels huffed. "I’m just…"

"Worried about Connie. I get it. I’m worried too. She may not be my blood, but she sure as hell is like a little sister to me."

When they finally arrived at the hospital Daniels practically bounded into the hospital. He was pointed toward Constance’s room and with AJ he rode the elevator up the three floors. Had he been alone he probably would have raced up the three flights, but since AJ was there he nervously waited for the elevator to deliver them to their desired floor.

They found Constance’s room easily, bumping into the on call doctor on her way out from checking on her.

"How is she, doc," Daniels asked the petite woman.

"She’s got a few cracked ribs and lacerations and contusions on her face, but those will heal in time," she replied. "My main concern is her mental state."

Daniels pursed his lips and nodded grimly.

"She won’t say exactly how long this has been going on, but judging from the x-rays we took it’s not the first time he’s landed her in the hospital." The doctor turned her gaze to the woman sleeping in the room. "This is only the beginning unless she can get away."

"That’s why I’m here," Daniels assured her. "She’s my little sister. I’m here to take care of her."

The doctor nodded, though she was not comforted by his words. She gave Constance one last look, feeling like she’d see her again before long, and went to check on her other patients.

Daniels made his way into the room, his eyes closing as he took in the sight of his sister covered in bruises and cuts, his fingers pinching the bridge of his nose. AJ too was taken aback by the purples, yellows and reds marbling her olive skin. Obviously the yellowing bruises were older than the vulgar purple and red ones.

"Connie," Daniels said softly, pulling a chair over to the bed and taking his sister’s hand. "It’s Chris, honey. I’m here." He reached out and brushed some reddish brown hair from her face.

She winced at the touch and opened her mocha colored eyes. "Chris," she said barely above a whisper. Tears flooded her eyes and slipped down her cheeks.

"Don’t cry, baby girl," he soothed, wiping away the tears gently. He was afraid to touch her face for fear of causing her more pain. "I’m here." He placed a kiss on the back of the hand he held.

"I’m here too, Connie," AJ said stepping into view behind Daniels.

Constance closed her eyes, a small sob escaping her lips. "I’m scared, Chris," she whispered. "I’m so scared of Justin." She opened her eyes and met her brother’s gaze.

"You don’t have to be scared anymore, Connie," Daniels promised. "I’m here now. I’ll take care of everything. Right now you get some rest."

She whimpered as she nodded, closing her eyes. She was asleep moments later, more at ease now that she had family with her.

Daniels turned his gaze to AJ. "Let the local police know that she’ll be pressing charges after all."

"But, Chris…"

"I said she will be pressing charges, AJ," Daniels replied, his eyes hard. "She won’t have a choice."

AJ made his way out of the room and down to the nurses’ station to place the call. He knew better than to argue with his friend about this. His mind was set.

Chapter 2

When Constance woke the next morning she could hear her brother and AJ speaking in hushed tones. She soon heard another voice that she didn’t recognize. She fluttered open her eyes and saw Daniels and AJ in the doorway speaking to a uniformed officer.

"Chris," she called softly.

Daniels turned his attention from the officer and went to her side. "I don’t want any argument about this, Connie," he said before she could speak. "You’re pressing charges."

"I know," she sighed. "I knew that when you showed up last night."

Daniels brushed some hair from her face and forced a smile. The bruises marring his little sister’s skin turned his stomach.

"You know you could have saved me the trouble if you had agreed to it last night," he teased gently.

"I’m stubborn. It runs in the family," she shrugged and groaned at the pain. "Help me into the bathroom?"

He obliged and walked her to the door. When he was sure she was safely inside he headed back to AJ and the cop.

"She all right," AJ asked. Daniels nodded curtly to him before looking at the officer before him.

"She’ll be ready for you in a couple of minutes," he said. The policeman nodded and leaned against the doorframe to wait.

As promised a few minutes later Daniels helped Constance back into bed. He perched on the edge of the bed, holding her hand.

"Miss Daniels, my name is Officer John Salem and I’m here to take your statement. I want you to take your time and tell me everything you remember from last night." He pulled over a chair and pulled out a notepad.

"Everything I remember," Constance sighed. "I remember every minute. Justin came home late from doing who or God knows what. When I asked where he’d been he backhanded me."

Daniels cringed at his sister’s words.

"And you didn’t instigate this in any way," Salem asked.

"No," she replied softly. "I learned a while ago not to rock the boat."

"This isn’t the first time he’s assaulted you," Salem asked.

Constance looked up at her brother and then over at AJ, who was leaning against the wall by the door. They both gave her encouraging nods and she reluctantly continued.

"No. He’s been using me as a punching bag for going on four months now," she replied. "At first it was just a slap here or there when I mouthed off…but…"

"Your x-rays showed recently broken ribs," Salem pointed out. Constance averted her gaze, suddenly finding the blanket fascinating, and nodded. "There was also a spiral fracture to your left arm. The doctor said that you really should still have a cast on it."

"Justin broke it off," Constance said, tears flooding her eyes. "He said he couldn’t stand looking at it."

"I think I have enough here," Salem said seeing how upset she was getting. "I’ll need you to come by the station to sign papers once the report is written up." Constance nodded as the officer stood.

"I’ll be back in a little bit, Connie," Daniels said kissing the crown of her head. With that he and AJ followed the officer out of the room.

"Your sister’s been through a lot," Salem said once they had made their way to the nurses’ station. "You can see it in her eyes. They’re…haunted. She’s lucky to have family support. Most women in her situation don’t find a way out."

As the men spoke they never notice the tall, tattooed man headed down the hall. He carried a teddy bear, a box of chocolates and a bouquet of roses with him.

Constance had allowed the tears to flow and was just resting her head back on the pillows with her eyes closed when she heard someone enter the room. "Is he gone now, Chris," she asked, not opening her eyes.

"Who the fuck is Chris," Justin demanded. Constance gasped her eyes shooting open. "Well? Who the fuck is Chris?"

"Justin…"

He took a step toward her, dropping the gifts he’d brought. Constance tossed the covers aside and attempted to scramble out of bed. Justin caught her by her hair before she could get far.

"NO," was all she could get out before Justin had dragged her over the bed toward him. He pulled her to his chest, his hand like a vice grip around her neck. His green eyes bore into her like acid daggers. She could smell alcohol on his breath as he pulled her face to his.

Out in the hall Daniels’ head snapped up at the sound of his sister’s scream. "That was Connie," he said taking off down the hall. AJ and Salem were close behind.

"Justin, please don’t do this," she sobbed. "Not here."

"Who the fuck is Chris, Connie," he growled.

"I am," Daniels said from the doorway. He glared at the man holding his sister. "Let her go."

"You fuckin’ this guy behind my back, baby," Justin chuckled. "You got a thing for bald heads?"

"He’s…my…brother," Constance sobbed.

"Let her go," Daniels reiterated.

Justin snorted. "Or what? You gonna beat me with those big ears, Dumbo?"

"Mr. Mulwray," Salem said finally letting his presence be known.

Justin’s eyes darted to the uniformed officer and a sick smile spread across his face as he tightened his grip around her neck. "You call the cops on me, baby? You think they can keep me in jail? I’ll be out on bail by sunset."

"Mr. Mulwray, let the woman go," Salem said, his hand on his gun.

"Or what? You’ll shoot me," Justin snickered.

"You think you’re a big man because you slap a girl around," AJ finally put in his two cents. "What do you have about a hundred pounds on her? Real fair fight. How about you try taking your shit out on a MAN."

"And you think you’re the man for the job," Justin scoffed. "How about you, Baldy?"

"Bring it on, bitch," Daniels replied with a smirk.

Justin looked at Constance a moment before he tossed her aside like trash. She yelped as she hit the side of the bed, the unforgiving metal crushing her already sore ribs. He surveyed the men before him, taking in their smaller size and smirked.

He stepped toward Daniels, hands outstretched for him. It wasn’t long before he found himself face down on the ground. He didn’t even have time to think about what was happening.

Salem pushed Daniels out of the way before the confrontation could escalate more. He had Justin in cuffs and was reading him his rights, dragging him out of the room.

"This ain’t over, Connie. You and me…we’re forever, baby," Justin called as Salem dragged him away.

AJ was at Constance’s side, helping her up carefully. "You all right, Connie?"

She bit her bottom lip as pain radiated through her right side. "I think I’ll live."

"Justin sure as hell won’t if he ever comes near you again," Daniels growled as he gathered up the forgotten gifts and tossed them in the trash.

The doctor, who had seen Justin being taken away in handcuffs, came in to check on Constance. "I’ll need you boys to step out a moment while I examine Constance."

AJ headed out into the hall after helping Constance back into bed. Daniels hesitated in the doorway.

"Go on, Chris," Constance said. "I’ll be all right."

Daniels nodded. "I’ll be right outside the door."

He closed the door behind him giving his sister and the doctor some privacy before going over to where AJ was leaning against the wall. AJ looked up at his friend and could see the stress of the past twenty four hours written all over his face.

"Hey, that jackass is in jail now, Chris. You can relax. Connie’s safe with the both of us around," he said.

"And what about when we’re not," Daniels asked, scrubbing a hand down his face. "You heard him, AJ. He’ll be out on bail by sunset. I’m not naïve. I don’t have any illusions that he’ll leave her alone."

"I wish I knew what to say," AJ frowned. "Short of taking her on the road with us…"

"That’s it," Daniels cut him off, perking up a bit. "Justin can’t touch her if she’s not anywhere near him."

"But…you think Connie’ll go for that? Just uprooting and following you around the country? She’s not that five year old following her teenage brother around like he’s a god anymore, Chris."

"I’ll talk to her," Daniels replied, a small smile on his face. The more he thought about it the happier he got. He hadn’t spent any quality time with his sister in a long while. This could be just what the doctor ordered.

"Mr. Daniels," the doctor said coming out of the room. "Your sister will be just fine. She’s going to have one hell of a bruise on her side, but I don’t believe any more ribs have been cracked. I’m sending her for x-rays soon. Barring any unforeseen injuries by the current event I can discharge her tomorrow."

"Thank you, doctor," Daniels smiled. "AJ, I need a moment to speak to Connie."

"Sure," AJ nodded. "I’ll head down to the cafeteria. I need some coffee."

The two men parted ways. AJ glanced over his shoulder as Daniels disappeared into his sister’s room. He hoped his friend knew what he was doing.

Chapter 3

"Connie, we need to talk," Daniels said entering his sister’s room. He knew that she’d be carted away for more x-rays soon and he needed to speak to her before that happened. He didn’t know if she’d be awake enough later on to digest what he was about to say.

"Where’s AJ?"

"He’s giving us a moment," Daniels replied pulling over a chair and sitting down. "I’m worried about you, Constance."

The use of her full first name alerted her that what he had to say was extremely important.

"Chris, I would have called and told you about this, but…"

"I don’t care about the reasons," he said, his voice neutral. "Connie, I want you to come on the road with me," he blurted out.

Her eyebrows knitted together, unsure if she had heard him right.

"You what?"

"Justin won’t stay away from you. I can see that by the way he had the balls to show up here today. I can’t just walk away and hope for the best for you. You’re my sister and I want to know that you’re safe."

"But…Chris…I…you want me to go on the road with you?"

"It would make me feel better."

She could see how serious he was about this request. She pondered it silently. Daniels stared at her, unable to read her face. He hoped and prayed that she wouldn’t fight him on this. The last thing he needed was to worry about her.

"And I suppose you’ll be policing my every move too," she said.

Daniels shook his head. "You’re twenty eight, Connie. You don’t need a babysitter. I just want you away from this guy. Besides that I haven’t seen you in forever. I’d like to spend time with my baby sister. Is that so wrong?"

Constance sighed and shook her head no. "I would protest, giving excuses about my job, but…"

"But?"

"Justin got me fired recently," she grimaced at the thought of her dwindling bank account. "I’m probably about to get evicted anyway." She sniffled, closing her eyes tightly. "God, I’m such a loser!"

"Hey! You’re a Daniels, Connie. We are NOT losers," he admonished, taking her hand. "The loser is Justin and he’s dragged you down with him." She opened her eyes, unshed tears shining in them. "You’re lucky you have a handsome big brother to help you get back on your feet."

"That’s not really fair to you, Chris. I mean, yes, AJ’s handsome and all, but…" she teased.

He chuckled, shaking his head. It was good to see her joking despite the situation she was in. "So, will you come on the road with me?"

She sighed, knowing he wasn’t going to let this go or take no for an answer. "I just hate feeling like dead weight."

"Honey, you’re family. I don’t mind taking care of you." He smiled as a thought struck him. "You said you’re about to be evicted, right?" Constance nodded. "So, why don’t you come stay with me?"

"Chris…I couldn’t…"

"Of course you can. Lisa will love having you around and the kids haven’t seen their Aunt Connie in forever. Jerica has gotten so big already and Joshua just started pre-school this year."

"You’re not making me feel better, Chris. You know I love those kids to pieces and I miss chatting with Lisa. I feel terrible that we lost touch."

"Then say yes," he replied with a smirk. "Let’s get you out of this jam you’re in and then we’ll work on everything else. So?"

Constance rolled her eyes at him, but finally conceded. "But only until I can get back on my feet."

Daniels smiled wide, standing and hugging her. "You’ll see. Things will get better. I’ll make sure of that."

"I take it she agreed to come with us when we go back on the road," AJ asked coming back into the room. "By the way, Jeff says take all the time you need." He held up his phone signaling that he had spoken to their boss.

"Not only that," Daniels said smiling. "She’s moving in with me."

"Temporarily," Constance corrected. "I need to get away from this place."

"I couldn’t agree more," AJ smiled. "So, looks like we’ll be spending a lot of time together."

"Lord help me," she sighed making both men laugh.

A wheelchair was wheeled in then to take her for her x-rays.

"We’ll talk more when you get back," Daniels said. He watched her being wheeled out of the room before turning toward AJ, a wide smile on his face.

"I get it," AJ sighed. "You’re happy to be able to keep an eye on her."

"Not only that, but the guys will be ecstatic to see her, especially Joe. He always had a soft spot for Connie."

AJ groaned, shaking his head. "That means that Sabin and Shelley are gonna be like lovesick puppies again."

Daniels chuckled and shook his head. The last time she had visited her brother at work Chris Sabin and Alex Shelley had followed her everywhere. It took Samoa Joe threatening them bodily harm for them to leave her alone.

"You know I think Joe has a crush on Connie," AJ said. "Might wanna keep an eye on that one."

"Nah," Daniels replied shaking his head. "Joe’s a good guy. Not that Connie’s ready for a new boyfriend or anything, but…if it ever does happen…I wouldn’t object. At least I know Joe will treat her right."

"True." He clapped Daniels on the back. "Come on, buddy. I’ll treat ya to the best dinner the cafeteria can offer."

"Big spender," Daniels laughed as they walked toward the elevators.

Constance smiled as her thoughts drifted to the idea of getting out of the miserable existence her life had become. Her brother always managed to make things right for her. Now was no different.

She couldn’t wait to see all her friends once again. It had been ages since she’d spoken to any of them. Most importantly she’d get the chance to see her family again. Her thoughts flashed to her sister-in-law and her niece and nephew.

Her smile turned to a small frown. The last time she had visited her brother she hadn’t even known who Justin Mulwray was. He hadn’t managed to charm his way into her life just yet.

How was it that she fell for him the way she had? He had been a handsome man when they met. He was just over six feet tall with sandy waves that fell just past his ears. His green eyes were the color of crystal clear emeralds. He kept in shape, his trim muscular build attested to that and the many tattoos scattered over his arms and torso added a bad boy vibe that she had always been attracted to.

Unfortunately he’d been too much of a bad boy for her and before she knew what to do she was in too deep. She had found out a few months into the relationship that Justin was dealing drugs. Worse though was the fact that he himself was a drug addict, which often led him into trouble with his supplier.

She had tried to leave, but Justin had caught her. She spent her first night in the emergency room then, a fractured eye orbital for her troubles. Over the next several months things just continued to get worse. And that’s what brought her to this place in life.

She had been so wrapped up in her thoughts that she didn’t even realize that she had been brought back to her room until she felt hands helping her to stand. She thanked the orderly and climbed into bed.

Daniels reached out and took her hand once she was settled. "Everything is going to get better, Connie. I promise you that."

She nodded slightly. "Do your baby sister a favor, Chris?" He nodded. "I’m sure AJ has a hotel room for the two of you. Would you use it? Go get some sleep in a bed."

He opened his mouth to protest, but could see that she wasn’t going to take no for an answer. He sighed, realizing that she was just as stubborn as he could be when she set her mind to it.

"Fine," he finally said. He didn’t think Justin would show up again that night. From the looks of him he was probably either off on a bender or sleeping off whatever he'd taken. If he did show his face Salem had left a couple of officers to keep watch. He felt confident she’d be all right overnight. "I’ll be back early tomorrow. Doc says you can leave if your x-rays check out."

Connie nodded. He leaned down and kissed her forehead. "Get some rest."

"You too," she replied. "I don’t want you falling asleep at the wheel and nearly killing us all like you did last time."

"That was one time," Daniels groaned. "Let it go!"

AJ just chuckled as he bent down to give her a kiss on the cheek. "I’ll be by tomorrow too."

"Love you guys," Constance called as they left. She could hear them mumble they loved her too as they left and she smiled.

Settling into bed she laid her head back on the pillows with a sigh. One way or another her life was going to change come the morning. She just hoped it was for the better.

Chapter 4

Once Daniels and AJ made it back to the hotel they collapsed on their beds. Daniels rolled onto his back, pulling his cell phone out. He knew he needed to give his wife the heads up about Constance coming to live with them. With a sigh he hit the speed dial and waited for Lisa to pick up.

AJ knew that he’d need privacy so he grabbed his bag and headed into the bathroom to grab a shower.

"Lisa, honey," Daniels said propping himself up against the headboard.

"I heard from AJ earlier," Lisa said in greeting. "Is Connie all right?"

"She’ll be fine," Daniels lied. "Um…honey, I need to talk to you about that. See…she needs a place to stay for a while."

"You know that I don’t have a problem with your sister, Chris," Lisa replied. "But I get the feeling that you’re not telling me everything."

Daniels went into detail about why his sister was hospitalized and what was going on. Lisa listened to her husband, knowing that it was no use cutting him off. She knew he needed to vent.

"Baby, the bastard beat the shit out of my sister," he finished. "I want to kill him."

"I know you do, honey," Lisa replied. "I don’t blame you, but do you think it’s safe to bring her here around the kids? What if this Justin guy is crazy enough to follow her here?"

"Are you asking me to just walk away and leave my sister to the wolves?"

"No! I would never ask that of you," Lisa replied, appalled by his question. "I just worry about our safety."

"Lisa, baby, you know I’d die before I ever let anything happen to any one of you. Please. Connie needs to be with family right now."

He could hear her sighing and practically see her raking a hand through her golden tresses. "You’re right," she finally said. "Of course you’re right. I trust your judgement and I know Jerica and Joshua will be excited to finally be able to see their Aunt Connie."

Daniels smiled and breathed a sigh of relief. He had known she’d agree in to his request, but the initial resistance had worried him. He knew he’d have to make sure that Lisa felt safe in her own home once Connie was moved in.

"Thank you, Lisa," he said. "I love you. Tell the kids daddy loves them too. We’ll see you soon."

"Everything all right," AJ asked exiting the bathroom toweling his hair dry.

Daniels turned his attention his best friend once he had hung up with his wife and nodded. "Did you leave any hot water?" AJ smirked and nodded, tossing his towel at his friend as he headed into the bathroom.

The next morning Constance was released from the hospital. She had a fresh cast on her left arm. She had suffered no further cracked ribs, though she did have a bruise running the length of her right side. Breathing was painful, but she’d adjust.

She followed her brother and AJ to their rental and slid into the backseat, not really looking forward to going to the tiny apartment she’d been calling home. She was fearful that Justin was just lying in wait to pounce on her.

While she was very certain Daniels could handle himself against an attack from her deranged boyfriend she still feared for his and AJ’s safety. All the martial arts training in the world couldn’t help her brother if Justin decided to fight dirty. She knew he would eventually if given the chance.

"I’ll wait out here while you guys go pack," AJ said once they had parked outside Constance’s building.

"Come on," Daniels said taking his sister’s hand and leading her inside. She had been quiet the whole ride there and he could tell she was frightened. "I promise I won’t let anything else happen to you."

She nodded, pulling her key out and unlocking the apartment door. When they entered her mouth dropped open.

The place looked like a tornado had blown through. The furniture was practically shredded to splinters, pictures in frames lay smashed on the floor, DVDs and CDs had been shattered and lay in scattered shards all over and clothes were strewn everywhere.

Daniels frowned glancing around the small living room they had walked into. He urged his sister ahead of him into the bedroom. "Grab what you can and let’s go," he said gently, but firmly.

Constance dragged her gaze away from the mess and obeyed her brother, heading into the bedroom. She found a duffel bag and grabbed as much clothing as she could find. Whatever Justin had damaged she’d have to replace, but she would worry about that later.

Once she had filled the bag Constance headed back into the living room. She found her brother squatting down on the floor staring at a smashed picture he had picked up. Looking over his shoulder she could see that it was a picture of them and their mother at his high school graduation.

"Mom was so proud of you," she smiled.

Daniels looked up at her and nodded with a small smile. "She’s always been proud of you too, Connie." He pulled the scratched picture from the frame and handed it to her as he stood.

"Right. She’s proud of me. The ne’er do well, hopeless, flighty Constance, who can’t seem to find a good man or hold onto a job."

Daniels grasped her shoulders gently. "Connie, mom loves you no matter what you do in life. This pity party really has to stop, honey."

She brought her mocha gaze up to meet his and sighed. "You’re right. I know you’re right, but I can’t help feeling sorry for myself." Tears flooded her eyes and she blinked them back. "What did I do to deserve this?" He motioned to the trashed room and held up the arm with the cast.

"You did nothing except make a bad choice in a boyfriend," Daniels replied, sliding his arm around her shoulders. He led the way out of the apartment as he did so. "Then again you always did have crappy taste in guys."

Connie chuckled and elbowed him in the ribs. "Don’t mistake the bruises and cast for weaknesses, buddy," she teased. "I’ll still kick your ass."

"That’s the Connie I know and love," he chuckled. "Come on. Let’s hit the road."

@

The ride to join up TNA on their house show tour was a quiet one. The pain meds that the doctor had prescribed knocked Constance out most of the time. AJ was hesitant to speak loudly for fear of disturbing her. In her condition he knew she needed all the rest she could get.

Daniels parked the car in the hotel lot and glanced into the backseat where his sister lay sleeping.

"You grab the bags," AJ said opening his door. "I’ll get Connie."

Daniels got out of the car and headed to the trunk to grab their bags. AJ slid out of the passenger seat and opened up the back door. Carefully he scooped her up, not wanting to cause her any undo pain. She barely stirred, resting her head on his shoulder.

"Those must be some heavy duty pain killers," AJ commented as he followed Daniels toward the rooms.

"Shit," Daniels groaned seeing Sabin and Shelley heading their way. The men were playfully arguing as they strolled leisurely down the hall.

"Just ignore them, Chris," AJ urged as they continued on.

"Easier said than done," Daniels muttered.

The two younger men spotted them soon and headed straight toward them. "Hey, Chris, we heard you had a family emergency," Alex said.

"Yeah, are Lisa and the kids all right," Sabin added.

"They’re fine," Daniels replied shifting bags from one shoulder to the other.

It was then that Sabin and Shelly noticed the woman in AJ’s arms. Both men quirked brows at him.

"Uh…AJ? You cheating on Wendy," Alex asked.

"No," AJ hissed. "Keep your voices down and mind your own damn business."

Just then Constance’s head lolled to the side and her hair fell out of her face. Sabin caught sight of the bruises marring her cheek and forehead.

"OH MY GOD!" Alex slapped a hand over his friend’s mouth.

"Is that Connie," Alex hissed.

"Yes," Daniels replied. "She’s had a rough couple of days and I’d like to get her to our room if you don’t mind."

"No problem," Sabin said. "If you need us for anything let us know."

"Thanks guys," Daniels replied. With that he motioned for AJ to follow him.

Sabin and Shelley watched the two head off down the hall before turning their attention to each other. They’d never seen Constance looks so frail and battered before. It was a far cry from the woman they’d known not so long ago.

"What’s with you two," they heard a deep voice ask from behind them. Turning toward the speaker they saw Samoa Joe staring at them.

"Daniels and AJ just got here," Sabin replied.

"Yeah? And?"

"They’ve got Connie with them," Alex answered and then bit his lip before he could say more.

Joe groaned and shook his head. "Don’t tell me you guys are gonna start that shit again," he sighed. "I can’t take you two acting like fools…well…more so than normal." He snickered at his own joke.

"Joe…" Sabin hesitating, debating whether he should tell the Samoan what they’d seen or not. "That family emergency that Chris had…it was Connie."

"What happened?" The smile was wiped away in an instant, replaced by a worried frown.

"Someone slapped her around pretty bad," Alex blurted out. "She’s all bruised."

"Who?" The worry was now replaced by anger as his hands at his sides balled into fists.

"Dunno. She was passed out in AJ’s arms. Chris said something about it being a rough couple of days and that he wanted to get her settled in their room."

Joe scrubbed a hand down his face. "Fine. I’ll leave them be for tonight, but tomorrow I want answers." With that he stalked off leaving Sabin and Shelley wondering if they’d made a mistake telling Joe what they’d seen.

Chapter 5

The next morning AJ was just brushing his teeth when he heard a knock at the door. He had already showered and dressed. Daniels had just gotten in the shower and Constance was still sleeping as far as he knew.

He answered the door, still brushing his teeth. "Joe," AJ said, pulling the toothbrush out of his mouth and swallowing hard. The look on the large Samoan’s face was enough to make him want to close the door and barricade it.

"Where is she," Joe demanded.

"Where is who, Jo.."

"Don’t play with me, AJ. You know who I mean," Joe snarled, staring him down.

AJ gulped under Joe’s glare. "Look, Joe, Chris thinks it’s best that…"

"I didn’t ask what Chris thought was best," Joe said calmly.

This frightened AJ more so than the glaring. He knew that Sabin and Shelly had told Joe what they had seen the night before and this was just the calm before the storm.

"Where the fuck is Connie, AJ?"

"Chris wants her to rest, Joe," AJ said trying to sound firm, but failing under the large Samoan’s glare. "She’s been through a lot and she needs to heal."

Joe grabbed AJ by the shirt collar, bringing his face close so that they were nose to nose. "I want to see Connie, AJ."

"Joe! Please stop," they both heard a soft voice from behind them.

Both men turned their gaze toward the sound and saw Constance looking appalled. Joe could see a slight tremor as she stared at him gripping AJ’s shirt collar. He quickly released AJ, shoving him out of the way, to go to her.

He took in the bruises on her face and the cast on her arm. His blood was boiling, but he pushed it to the back of his mind. The last thing he wanted to do was scare her more.

"Connie," he said his tone softer now. "Baby girl, what happened?" He opened his arms for her.

She flinched at his quick actions, her gaze going to AJ a moment before turning back to Joe. She stared at him, unsure of what do to. He had almost lost hope that she was going to accept the hug when she finally stepped forward. Tears filled her eyes as she walked into his awaiting arms. He wrapped her up gently, fearing that she had injuries he couldn’t see.

Joe held her, rubbing her back gently, as she cried. Gradually what had happened to her with Justin spilled from her lips. Joe fought the urge to squeeze her tightly. He wanted nothing more than to hold her in his arms and keep her safe.

When she was done telling him all about what Justin had done Joe held her away from him at arm’s length so he could get a good look at her face. Gently he tilted her chin up and ran a thumb gently over the worst of the bruising on her cheek and temple. She flinched at the touch and pulled her face away from him, hanging her head.

Joe pulled her back into his arms and hugged her as tightly as he dared considering her injuries. "You’re safe now, Connie," he whispered in her ear.

"Bathroom’s all yours, Con..nie," Daniels said coming out of the bathroom and seeing his sister in Joe’s arms.

"Joe’s here," AJ stated seeing Daniels’ face. He was unsure what exactly his friend was thinking and feeling at that moment.

"I see that, AJ," Daniels replied. "I thought I told you that I didn’t want anyone bothering Connie."

"Like anyone could keep Joe out," AJ muttered. Daniels glared at him. "It’s not like Joe’s gonna do anything bad to Connie! Look, he’s being gentle."

Constance pulled away from Joe, wiping the tears from her face. "It’s all right, Chris," she said softly. "I don’t mind Joe being here."

Joe kept an arm around her. He had listened to the exchange between his friends, keeping silent. What Constance had just told him weighed heavily on his mind and he just didn’t have words for what he was feeling.

"You should go in and wash up," Daniels finally said. "I need to speak to AJ and Joe."

Constance nodded, slipping away from Joe’s side. The three men watched her head into the bathroom before turning their attention to the others.

When he heard the water running Daniels finally spoke. "I know I can trust you to keep an eye out for my sister, Joe. AJ too. I want one of you with her at all times when I can’t be."

"I’ll kill the fucker who did this to her," Joe said, cracking his knuckles. His voice was soft, but they could hear the conviction in his words. "This Justin motherfucker should be Big Bubba’s bitch by now."

"I know," Daniels frowned. "If I hadn’t shown up she probably wouldn’t have pressed charges at all. I think we need to look into a restraining order for her." Joe nodded.

"Chris, I hate to be the buzzkill here, but…Connie doesn’t want babysitters," AJ pointed out. "I understand your concern for her welfare. I don’t want anything else to happen to her, but…how are you going to go about convincing her to allow one of us to be with her at all times?"

"She won’t have a choice," Joe replied. "I am not letting her go anywhere unless one of us is with her."

"That’s what I’m supposed to say," Daniels said with a smirk. He clapped Joe on the back. "I’m glad I can count on you."

AJ snickered. "One look at this big angry Samoan and Justin will be shittin’ himself."

"Damn right," Joe said proudly. "So, we doing this in shifts or…"

"We’ll let Connie decide who she wants to hang out with wherever we are," Daniels cut him off. "She should have some choice in the matter."

"How generous of you," AJ muttered dryly. Both Joe and Daniels glared at him.

"It’s this or we take the chance of Justin finding her and doing…" Daniels’ words faltered at the thought of his sister being put through worse than what she’d already been through. "It’s this or that bastard kills her, AJ."

"I didn’t say I was against the plan completely," AJ said defensively. "I just think maybe we should include Connie in the plans."

Joe nodded and sighed loudly. "You know, I hate to admit it, but AJ’s right."

Daniels frowned, but nodded. He too knew that AJ’s assessment was right. "Just as long as she’s not left alone at any point in time," Daniels said.

A scoff from behind them signaled that Constance was done washing up and had heard at least part of what they were saying.

"I can not believe you," she said glaring at her brother. "You’re a grown woman, Connie," she mocked him. "Bullshit!" She stalked into her room and slammed the door.

"That went well," AJ said.

"One of us should go talk to her," Daniels sighed.

"I’ll go," Joe said.

"No," AJ said stopping him. "I’ll go. I think she’ll actually open the door for me."

"Fine," Joe huffed. He turned his attention to Daniels. "Just give me a call if you guys need me."

"I think it would be best if you go take a walk," AJ said to Daniels. "She’s more likely to talk to me if you’re not around…considering she’s mad at you right now."

Daniels didn’t like it, but he nodded and followed Joe out of the suite.

AJ headed over to Constance’s room door and knocked lightly. "Connie? Connie, honey, let me in please." When there was no response he tried again. "Connie, Chris and Joe are gone. They stepped out. It’s just me."

The lock on the door clicked and the door opened, revealing Constance’s tear stained face.

"I hate that he’s being like this," she sighed.

"He’s your brother," AJ smiled. "How do you expect him to act?"

"He just makes me feel like I can’t take care of myself." Fresh tears brimmed in her eyes. "I was independent before…" She sniffled, a tear slipping down her cheek. "Before Justin," the words were barely a whisper.

AJ reached out and pulled her into a hug. "Joe and Chris are just being that way because they love you, Connie. I love you too, ya know."

"Maybe…maybe Justin will give up now that I’m gone," she said, a hopeful tone to her voice.

"Maybe, but I doubt it," AJ said gently.

She hung her head and nodded. "I know. I just hate Chris being so worried about me. Now Joe is too. I wish I had never met Justin."

"Five minutes alone with Joe and he’ll wish he’d never met you too," AJ chuckled. Constance met his gaze and cracked a smile. "There’s that smile I love. I’m starvin’. How about you go wash up and we go grab some breakfast?"

"AJ, I can’t go out with my face like this," Constance sighed.

"So, you’re gonna starve and hide out in the suite? That doesn’t sound like fun." A light bulb went off over his head and smile spread across his face. "Hang on."

He pulled his cell phone out and hit the speed dial. "Chris? Yeah, she’s fine. Listen grab Traci and tell her to bring her make up bag. We got a situation that could use her expertise."

"AJ, what did you just do," Constance demanded, her eyes wide as saucers.

Having Joe know about what had happened was one thing. Traci was the company’s grapevine. The last thing she needed was everyone knowing that Christopher Daniels’ little sister had been beaten up by her boyfriend.

"Relax, Connie. Everything will be fine," AJ replied with a smile. "Traci will work her magic and then we can go have breakfast somewhere."

"Great," Constance sighed, sinking to her bed. "Just what I need."

Chapter 6

The room door opened and Daniels entered. Traci was right behind him, toting her make up case.

"What’s going on, guys," she asked. "Why do you need my make up?"

It was then that she noticed the person hidden behind AJ. Peering around him she gasped.

"Connie? Is that you," she asked going to the woman and taking in the cast and the bruises.

"Hi, Traci," Constance said stepping out from behind AJ.

"What happened?"

"My boyfriend decided to use me as a punching bag," she replied with a shrug.

Traci looked from Daniels to AJ and then turned her attention back to Constance. "If I’m going to work my magic I’ll need space, gentlemen," she said setting her case down on the couch and opening it up.

"I won’t be far," Daniels said leaving with AJ in tow.

Traci pulled a chair over and made Constance sit down on the couch, going to work applying make up to cover the worst of the bruising. She worked in silence for a while.

"Go ahead and ask, Trace. I know you’re dying to."

Traci sighed as she applied the make up expertly. "How long has this been going on?"

"A while," was all Constance would reply. "Doesn’t really matter anymore. Justin and I are over."

"Does this Justin know that," Traci asked as she continued to touch up the make up.

Constance sighed and shrugged. "As far as I know he was in jail when Chris and AJ took me away."

Traci kept quiet as she worked. She wanted to ask her friend so many questions, but knew that bombarding her with questions wouldn’t be a good thing. She’d let Constance tell her everything in her own time.

"Well, that’s the best I can do with the worst of them," she said grabbing a mirror and showing Constance. The darker of the bruises were now faint marks on her temple and cheek. The lighter marks were gone completely.

Constance took the mirror and stared at her reflection a moment. Traci began to pack away her make up when she heard a shuddering breath from Constance. Turning her attention back to her friend she saw tears welling in her eyes.

"Connie," Traci said sitting next to her on the couch and slipping her arms around her.

"I should have gotten away sooner," Constance sobbed, burying her face in Traci’s shoulder.

Before she knew it she was spilling everything that had happened to her over the past few months with Justin. It felt good to be able to just get everything off her chest. Justin had done things to her that she just couldn’t tell her brother, AJ or Joe. She knew they’d want to do things to Justin that would land them on death row for sure.

"Traci, you have to promise not to breathe a word of what I just told you to anyone," Constance said sniffling as she dried her eyes. "I especially don’t want Chris, AJ or Joe hearing about…"

"Connie, I promise you I will not tell a soul what you just told me, especially those three. The bruises will fade and time will heal the rest," Traci smiled. "Now, let’s go find where that brother of yours got off to."

She stood and took Constance’s hand, pulling her up to her feet. She led the way out of the room, spotting Daniels and AJ down the hall talking to Sabin and Shelley.

"HI CONNIE," Sabin yelled, waving at her.

Constance couldn’t help giggling at the younger man’s antics. The giggle turned into a full on laugh when Alex joined in on the waving, a wide goofy grin on his face. She couldn’t help laughing harder when she saw her brother standing behind them pinching the bridge of his nose and shaking his head.

"I’m done beautifying, Connie," Traci smiled. "We’ll talk more later." She gave Constance a quick hug before heading off on her way.

"Can we hug ya," Sabin asked.

"Of course," Constance chuckled.

Both Sabin and Shelley stepped forward, arms open. Daniels cleared his throat, stopping the two from enveloping Constance.

"Gently, boys," he warned. "Remember she’s banged up."

"Sheesh! Chris, she’s not made out of porcelain," Alex grumbled as he wrapped his arms around her and gave her a squeeze.

"Yeah, she’s not gonna break," Sabin added and did the same on the other side of her.

"No, but you will," Joe replied walking up to the group. He walked over to Constance, shoving the two smaller men out of the way. He tucked a finger under her chin and brought her face up so that he could see what Traci had done.

"Do I pass inspection," she asked with a smirk. Just being around her brother and his friends for a short time had her feeling like her old self already.

"Beautiful," Joe smiled. Constance blushed under his gaze and he smiled wider. "Like always." He bent down and placed a feather light kiss on the tip of her nose.

This didn’t go unnoticed by the other men. AJ and Daniels exchanged glances. Both men made mental notes to speak to Joe at a later time. They didn't object to Joe being with Constance, but they wanted to make sure he understood she needed time to heal phyisically and emotionally.

"Ready to go? I’m starving," Sabin said noting that the group was complete now.

"Shocking. The bottomless pit is hungry," Joe quipped as he placed a hand on the small of Constance’s back, leading her toward the elevator. She chuckled, shaking her head.

"Now, Joe, you know that Chris is just a growing boy," Alex laughed, slipping his arm around Sabin’s shoulders. "He needs all the nourishment he can get."

Sabin scowled at Alex and shoved him away. "Fuck you!"

"For the last time, dude, I don’t bat on that side of the plate," Alex sighed. "But if I did I’d snap your cute ass up in a heartbeat." He slapped Sabin’s ass making his friend yelp in surprise.

Constance was wiping tears from her eyes from laughing so hard at the look on Sabin’s face. Daniels and AJ sighed and shook their heads as they all piled into the elevator, but neither could deny that it was good to hear her laughing.

Chapter 7

The ride to the diner had been anything but dull. Connie had been stuck between Sabin and Shelley who were engrossed in a bout of "girly" fighting. Both men leaning over her and daintily slapping at each other while Connie watched on, pinned to her spot in the middle.

After a while Joe shook his head and rolled his eyes at the two. He smacked both of them in the back of the head before hooking his hands under Constance’s arms and carefully pulling her over the seat to sit with him in the back of the SUV.

Sabin and Shelley held their heads scowls on their faces as they turned toward Joe.

"What the hell was that for," Sabin demanded.

"Yeah! We weren’t hurting anyone," Alex whined.

Joe tucked Constance under his arm and shrugged at the two. "Do I need a reason to abuse you two? I’m Joe. It’s what I do."

Alex sighed and shrugged turning his attention to his tag partner. "He’s got a point there, Chris."

Sabin scowled at him and smacked him upside the head, which led to a new slap fight. This time it wasn’t quite so dainty.

"Damn it! Settle down back there or I’ll turn this car around," Daniels yelled. "Whoa! I think I just channeled my dad then."

Constance giggled loudly. "Nah, dad would have smacked the two of them with one shot and then yelled," she called up to her brother.

"Dad didn’t have to steer a frickin’ Sherman tank through traffic, Connie," Daniels laughed.

"No, but he did pretty good with the submarine," Constance chuckled.

"Submarine," AJ asked, quirking a brow.

"Dad drove a ’67 Chevy Impala," Daniels replied. A dreamy smile spread across his face as he remembered the car he practically grew up in. "Cherry red."

"Chris, you got a little drool there," AJ teased.

"Why was dad so pissed at you that one time you borrowed the car," Constance giggled.

"Connie, don’t," Daniels warned.

"Oh yeah, I think it had something to do with you and a certain girlfriend," she teased.

"Connie, I’m warning you!"

"Shut it, baldy," Joe called. "I wanna hear the story."

Daniels cursed under his breath, but AJ could see the smile playing at the corners of his mouth. He was happy that his sister was laughing and having a good time.

"So, you popped your cherry in your dad’s car," Alex asked.

"Big deal," Sabin shrugged.

"It was when her father caught them," Constance laughed.

All eyes were on the back of Daniels’ head as the blush crept up from his neck making his ears a bright red.

"Her father caught you," Joe laughed.

Constance nodded. "And then called our dad! He was grounded for months!"

"How do you even know about that," Daniels demanded. "You were only like six when it happened!"

"Mom told me when I was older," Constance chuckled. "Dad was piiiiissssed."

"I bet," Joe chuckled. "Aw, don’t blush, Chris. That should be a happy memory."

"At least up to the point where her dad caught you," AJ snickered.

"Do you wanna walk to the next show," Daniels griped at his best friend.

"We’re here," Sabin exclaimed seeing the diner come into sight.

"Thank God," Daniels muttered. "No more embarrassing stories during breakfast, Connie." A wicked grin curled his lips as they all got out of the car. "Or I’ll be forced to tell everyone what you and Stacy D’Amico got caught doing when you were in ninth grade."

Constance’s cheeks flushed bright red. "You win. I’ll behave," she sighed.

"AW! Now you got my curiosity piqued," Sabin whined.

"Mine too," Alex agreed. "What were you two doing?"

"That’s for me to know and you to never find out," Constance said pinching both their cheeks as they headed inside.

They all headed inside and piled into a large booth at the back of the diner. Sabin and Shelley were still acting up and Constance had to laugh as both Joe and Daniels took turns slapping them upside the heads. The younger men settled down once the waitress came over and took their orders.

As they all sat talking and laughing the bell over the door dinged and Daniels turned his attention in time to see Kurt Angle and the rest of the Main Event Mafia strolled in. Kurt spotted the group and nodded toward AJ, Joe and Daniels.

"Morning gentlemen," Angle said as he led the group over to the table. He spotted Constance sitting between Daniels and Joe and smiled. "My God! Is that little Connie Daniels?"

"Hey, Kurt," she smiled up at him. "I’d hug ya, but…"

"Joe, get the hell out of the way and let her give me a hug," Kurt said yanking Joe out of the booth.

"You’re lucky you’re my friend," Joe grumbled as he stood aside and allowed Kurt to pull Constance up to her feet.

"It’s good to see you again, sweetheart," Kurt said hugging her tightly. Constance bit her lip and whimpered at the pressure on her ribs. Kurt frowned and held her at arm’s length. It was then that he could see the make up and spotted the cast.

"What happened," he asked Daniels.

"Long story," Connie replied. "I really don’t want to talk about it, Kurt."

"It’s all right, honey. You don’t have to," Angle replied, smiling. He cast a quick glance to Daniels, who motioned he’d talk to him about it at a later time. "You remember the others, right?"

Angle turned his attention motioning Sting, Nash, Booker, Sharmell and Steiner over. "Steve, you remember Connie Daniels, right?"

"No way," Nash exclaimed. "Pipsqueak Daniels? Can’t be!"

"Ya gotta call me that Big Dorky," Constance asked, glaring up at Nash. Her face broke into a smile when he pulled her into a hug.

"Good to see you, honey," Sting said giving her a one armed squeeze.

"I don’t think we’ve had the pleasure of meeting yet," Booker said.

"Oh right. Book, you weren’t around when Connie visited us last time. Has it really been that long," Angle asked her.

"Feels like forever," Constance replied, holding out her hand to Booker T and Sharmell. "Connie."

"Booker and this is my lovely wife Sharmell," he said smiling, taking her hand and shaking it.

"Good to see another woman around," Sharmell said also shaking her hand. "I’ll have someone to chat with when they start talking shop." She hooked her thumb at her husband and his friends, who were already discussing plans for the show that night. "See what I mean," she chuckled, shaking her head.

Everyone addressed Constance except Steiner. He hadn’t been paying attention too much until Angle had called out her name. The last time he’d seen Constance he couldn’t deny he’d been attracted to her. Now she looked even more beautiful despite the make up and the cast. The pain that shone through in her eyes excited him. She was like a wounded animal and that made him feel like a predator. He wanted to hunt her...very much so.

"Scotty, you remember Connie, right," Nash asked clapping his friend on the back.

"How could I forget," Steiner smiled.

Something about his smile creeped Constance out, but she pushed it to the back of her mind.

"Nice to see you again, Scott," she said offering him her hand.

He took it, still smiling and pulled her into a hug. After a couple of minutes she tried to pull away, but he held her firmly, inhaling the sweet scent of her perfume. When she was finally able to pull free he caught her hand and kissed the back of it.

"Scotty, let her be," Sting warned.

Steiner smiled at him and released her, holding up his hands in innocence. "Just playin’ around, Steve."

"Well, we’ll see you guys later," Angle said corralling his group. He exchanged a glance with Sting and Nash and shook his head at Steiner’s actions. "We’re starved."

They headed off to find their own table and Constance slid back into the booth next to her brother, who was chatting with AJ. She glanced at the retreating group and found Steiner staring at her. He winked before slipping into the booth next to Nash. Constance pulled her gaze from him when she felt a hand on her shoulder.

"I’m sorry, Joe. Did you say something?"

"Are you all right," he asked. He had seen how she was staring at Steiner and was worried. He turned to where her eyes had trailed, but didn’t see anything unusual.

"Fine," she replied forcing a smile. She was probably just overreacting because of what she had been through with Justin. "Oh good. The food’s here."

The waitress set their plates in front of them and Constance dug in. If she was eating Joe couldn’t question her further. She was overreacting to Steiner, that was all there was to it.

Chapter 8

"Connie, please don’t be stubborn about this," Daniels said. He was fighting to remain calm, but the more adamantly Constance refused his proposal the angrier he got.

"You said I’m an adult, Chris," Constance said, crossing her arms across her chest.

"You are, Connie, but you’re also my kid sister. I won’t be able to concentrate on the show if you’re here all by yourself," Daniels yelled, his temper finally boiling over. "I need to know you’re all right so I don’t wind up crippling myself out there."

Constance’s eyes flashed dangerously. She didn’t fear her brother or what he would do to her if she mouthed off and that helped her feel brave. She stepped up to him, staring him in the eye. Had she dared to do such a thing with Justin she would have wound up flying into the wall.

"Don’t you DARE try to guilt me into coming with you and AJ. I am not going to the arena with you, Chris, and that’s final," she said lowly.

"Connie," Daniels whined. "Please see reason."

"Is it so terrible that I want to relax and soak in a hot tub of water before curling up for a night of sleep," Constance asked.

"AJ, help me here," Daniels groaned at his best friend.

"Actually, Chris, I think Connie’s right." Daniels glared at him. "Look, you know how the guys are in the locker rooms. We’re pigs. Do you really want your sister around that?"

"She can stay in the women’s locker room."

"Yeah and I’m really sure the women would love to play babysitter," AJ replied.

Constance smiled. "Thank you, AJ." With that she headed into her bedroom.

"Thanks a lot, AJ," Daniel growled, plopping down onto the couch with a loud sigh.

"Traci and Frankie are right next store. She’s not being used tonight and Frankie’s go the night off because Suicide isn’t on the card. Just ask them to check in on Connie while we’re gone. It’s not like she’ll be all alone."

"Yeah, she’ll love that," Daniels frowned.

"For crying out," AJ groaned heaving himself up off the couch. "Connie," he called going to her door and knocking lightly on the frame. "We gotta leave soon. You remember Frankie Kazarian, right?"

"Yeah, why?"

"He’s right next door with Traci."

"When did that happen," Constance asked with a smile. She had known that they liked each other, but the last time she had seen them neither one had made a move on the other.

"A while ago. They’re engaged now," AJ smiled. "If you need anything go to them and they’ll get in touch with either Chris or me or Joe. All right?"

"Kay," Constance smiled.

"We’ll try not to get back too late," AJ said returning her smile. He headed back to the couch and stared down at Daniels. "Was that so hard?"

"Oh sure, you’re the good brother, AJ," Daniels griped. "You can do no wrong in her eyes. I’m the bastard that won’t let her breathe."

AJ grabbed Daniels’ hand and yanked him to his feet. "She knows you love her, Chris. She’s just doing what any little sister would do and bustin’ your chops. She appreciates what you’re doing for her. She always does."

"I guess."

"She does. Now let’s go before we hit traffic getting to the arena."

They gathered their things and headed out. Constance came out of her room once she was alone. She was just gathering her things when there was a knock at the door. With a sigh she headed to answer it.

"Hey, Connie," Frankie Kazarian said smiling when she opened the door. "Chris and AJ just stopped by before they left and asked Traci and I to just check in on you from time to time."

"Of course they did," Constance sighed.

Frankie chuckled. "Be thankful you have such a caring big brother, honey."

"I am."

"Well, Trace and I were just about to settle in for some movies. Thought I’d invite you over."

"Thanks, but there’s a hot bath calling my name," Constance politely declined.

"Fair enough. We’re right next door if you need anything. Don’t hesitate to knock."

"Thanks, Frankie."

"Enjoy your bath and the peace. Chances are once Chris and AJ get back that’ll be shattered, especially if they have Sabin and Shelley with them."

Constance chuckled and nodded. "I know."

Once she had gotten rid of Frankie Constance headed into the bathroom and started up a steaming bath for herself. She had just settled into the water when she heard her cell phone ringing. She let it ring for a while figuring it was her brother.

"He’ll send over the damn fire department if I ignore him," she mumbled to the empty room. Heaving a heavy sigh she pulled herself out of the tub, wrapping a towel around her as she went to grab the phone.

"Chris, I’m fine," she growled in greeting to the caller. "I was just enjoying a hot bath when you called."

"Mmmm…I bet you look sexy as hell wrapped in a nice fluffy towel, baby," Justin replied with a wicked cackle.

"Justin," Constance gasped, her body involuntarily shaking.

"I miss you baby," he said. "Why don’t you come home and I can show you how much?"

"No."

"Connie, I’m not mad. Just come home, baby. I need you."

"No, Justin. I’m not coming back to you ever."

"YOU BITCH!"

She couldn’t help jumping at this outburst. She nearly dropped the phone she was shaking so violently.

"GET YOUR ASS HOME OR I WILL HUNT YOU DOWN!"

Constance squeezed her eyes shut trying to steady her nerves. She kept repeating in her head that it was just a phone call and he couldn’t hurt her over the phone.

When she had willed herself to minimize the shaking and could think straight she spoke. "I’m not coming home, Justin," she said, cringing at how weak she sounded.

"I’m sorry, I couldn’t hear you. What was that, Connie," Justin demanded.

"I SAID I’M NOT COMING HOME," she yelled. "YOU LEAVE ME ALONE YOU PATHETIC BASTARD!"

"I WILL HUNT YOU DOWN YOU INGRATEFUL BITCH AND I WILL KILL EVERYONE YOU LOVE," Justin bellowed. "THAT BROTHER OF YOURS WILL BE LAST AND I’LL MAKE YOU WATCH AS I GUT THE BIG EARED BASTARD!"

"YOU LEAVE ME ALONE, JUSTIN," Constance cried, tears streaming down her face as she disconnected the call and tossed the phone away.

There was frantic knocking at the door. "Connie?" It was Traci’s voice.

Constance stood stunned by the call, her shaking more violent now.

There was another knock, this one heavier than the first. "Connie? Open up, honey. It’s Frankie and Traci."

Snapping out of the momentary daze she forced herself to the door and opened it. The two outside took one look at her and became increasingly concerned.

"What happened," Frankie asked as Traci brushed past him to tend to her friend. She wrapped her arms around Constance, ushering her over to the couch.

"J..Justin," she stammered, unable to speak any clearer because of the tremors racking her frame. "He c…called."

Frankie frowned. "I’m calling Chris. You all right with her, babe?" Traci nodded. He headed back to their room to grab his cell.

Once the women were alone Traci looked down at her friend. "Connie. Let’s get you dressed before Frankie comes back. All right?"

Constance nodded mutely, unable to say or do anything. She kept hearing Justin’s voice in her head. His threats were ringing in her ears.

Traci led her into her bedroom and grabbed some clothes, helping her dress. When she was clad in a pair of sweats and a T-shirt she led Constance back to the couch.

"Chris is coming back early. They didn’t have him on the card because of his family emergency so they stuck to that plan for the show," Frankie said to Traci. He looked at Constance, who hadn’t spoken anymore. Traci had one arm draped over her shoulders. Silent tears slipped down her face as she leaned into the buxom brunette's shoulder. "How is she?"

Traci glanced down at Constance and sighed. "Not good. She won’t tell me what Justin said to upset her."

"Maybe she’ll talk to her brother," Frankie offered sitting next to his fiancee. "We can stay with her until Chris gets back." Traci nodded, reaching out and lacing her fingers with his.

Chapter 9

"Your pants are ringing, Chris," Sabin said as he held Alex in a headlock.

The guys were all waiting for their respective matches. AJ had convinced Daniels to stick around instead of rushing back to the hotel to hover over his sister.

Daniels pulled his phone out, frowning when he saw that it was Frankie’s number. Cupping a hand over his ear he answered the phone.

"Frankie? What’s wrong?"

"I don’t know exactly what happened, Chris," Frankie replied sounding worried. "Traci and I were watching a movie and we heard Connie screaming. She says that Justin called her."

Daniels let out a string of curses that would make a truck driver blush.

"She’s damn near catatonic now," Frankie continued when Daniels was done with the cursing.

"I’m on my way back," Daniels said. "No action for me tonight anyway." He explained about the whole family emergency deal and then he hung up and headed back to his friends.

AJ and Joe had just gotten back from their match against Booker and Nash and were goofing off with Alex and Sabin when they saw Daniels’ face.

"What’s up, Chris," Joe asked.

"I have to get back to Connie," was all Daniels would say. "You guys all right with catching a ride with someone else.

"We got ‘em, Chris," Sabin said. He could see the worry written all over the older man’s face and hoped that nothing bad had happened to Constance.

"We’ll see you back at the hotel," AJ called as Daniels walked away.

"Come on, AJ. I don’t like the look on Chris’ face," Joe said nudging AJ toward the locker room so they could shower and change.

@

Traci and Frankie didn’t have to wait long. About a half hour later Daniels burst through the door, his face a mask of frantic worry.

"Where is she," he demanded of Frankie. "Where’s Connie?"

"Traci is with her in the bedroom. Chris, she’s pretty shaken up just from a phone call. What the hell did this guy do to her to freak her out with just a call?"

"I wish I knew," Daniels frowned. "She won’t talk about it. I’m guessing it’s worse than either one of us can imagine. Thanks for keeping an eye on her, Frankie."

"Anytime, man. Just take care of her," Frankie replied, patting Daniels on the back. "Let Traci know I went back to our room."

Daniels nodded watching as his friend left. He headed into the bedroom where he found Traci sitting on the side of the bed. Connie was curled up in her arms, sleeping. Traci was stroking his sister’s hair and speaking softly to her. He couldn’t help the small smile at the scene. Sometimes his friends amazed him with how loving they could be to him and his family.

Traci heard someone enter the room and turned her attention to him. "Hey," she said softly, pulling herself free. "She finally fell asleep, but she was pretty shaken up by the phone call."

"Did she say what Justin said to her?"

"Not specifically," Traci replied. "She said he threatened you and anyone she loves. I wish this junkie asshole would just leave her alone."

"You and me both, Trace," Daniels muttered. "Thanks for staying with her."

"It was no problem. I couldn’t leave her alone the way she was. She was terrified."

Constance stirred on the bed and both turned their attention toward her.

"You should get back to your fiance, Traci," Daniels said softly. "I can take care of her now."

Traci nodded, casting one last look at Constance’s sleeping form before leaving him alone.

Daniels made his way over to the bed and sat down carefully. Constance felt the bed shift and fluttered open her eyes. In that moment, though she was nearly thirty years old, Constance looked every bit like the little girl Daniels remembered her being.

Wide frightened eyes stared up at him a moment before he reached out and pulled her into his arms. She buried her face in his chest and let out a choked sob. He held her tightly and stroked her hair.

"I’m here now, Connie. He won’t hurt you ever again. I promise you," he murmured. "Honey, please tell me what he did to you to make you so afraid of him."

She pulled away, looking up at him with wide watery eyes. "No. I can’t. Please, Chris, I can’t." She buried her face in his chest and began to sob.

"Connie, I want to understand why he’s made you so afraid," Daniels said softly. She shook her head, sobbing harder. "Shhh. It’s all right, Connie. You don’t have to tell me." He sighed leaning his head back on the headboard. "I just wish you would so I can understand."

"It’s better if you don’t know," she sniffled, her voice muffled. "It will only make you mad and then you’ll do something that will land you in jail. You can’t do that to Lisa and the kids."

He half smiled at her concern. Here she was terrified of a man who had done God knows what to her and she was worried about him. He kissed the crown of her head and rubbed her back.

"I won’t do anything stupid or reckless. Please, Connie, just tell me what he’s done to you," he gently pleaded.

Constance pulled away from him, sitting up on her heels next to him. She took a deep breath and stared down at her hands. "Justin is a drug dealer," she said softly. "When I found out I tried to leave him."

She choked back a sob at the memory. "He..he beat me, Chris. Threw me practically through the wall."

"I already know that he beats you, Connie," Daniels said reaching out and taking her hand. He gave it a little squeeze. "He did more than beat you to make you so scared."

Constance nodded, not really wanting to reveal the horrible truth. "He’s forced himself on me," she said. Her voice was barely above a whisper. "The last time…two months ago…I wound up in the hospital because…I couldn’t stop the bleeding."

Daniels felt like he was punched in the gut. He had suspected as much, but to hear his baby sister say the words just knocked the breath from him. His blood was boiling, but he had made a promise to his sister and he aimed to keep it.

He made her lie down next to him, keeping his arms around her. "He won’t hurt you ever again, Connie." He kept saying that to her and he aimed to keep that promise. "Try to get some sleep. I’m staying right here with you. I won’t go anywhere."

Constance obeyed her brother, resting her head on his shoulder. She closed her eyes and was asleep within minutes. Daniels laid there holding her, listening to her breathing. One way or another Justin was going to pay for scarring Constance the way he had. He was never going to harm a hair on her head again.

@

AJ and Joe stopped at Frankie’s room when they got back from the arena. Both wanted to find out what had happened whle they were away.

"I don’t know what this guy did to that poor woman, but she was scared shitless," Frankie said after he had explained what happened.

"I’m glad you and Traci were there for her," AJ said saying good night and heading toward his room. Joe trailed behind him. AJ glanced at him, noting how silent and stoic Joe was. "Joe? You all right?"

Joe looked at him, a flash of pain in his brown eyes. He forced it away and made his face neutral again. "I hate that I can’t…that we can’t help her, AJ."

AJ placed a hand on his friend’s shoulder. "I do too. Right now all we can do is be there for Connie." Joe made an annoyed sound. "I know how much you care about Connie, Joe. She needs friends and family right now. Nothing more."

"You think I don’t know that," Joe demanded. "I just know that this bastard did shit to her that would turn any woman off of men." AJ flinched at his words. "I do care about Connie, but if she wants to just be friends I’ll respect that. I care about her too much to force anything further."

Daniels poked his head outside, his eyes bleary. He had been dozing when he heard voices outside. "Guys, keep it down," he hissed.

"How’s Connie," Joe asked.

"Sleeping." Daniels frowned remembering what she had told him that night. "Justin called and threatened her."

"Frankie told us," AJ nodded.

"You should get back to her before she wakes up," Joe said. "I’ll swing by in the morning." With that he headed down the hall to his own room.

"Poor guy," AJ sighed as he followed Daniels inside. "He really cares a lot about Connie."

"I know. I just hope he…"

"I already spoke to him," AJ cut him off. "He understands that Connie needs time."

"She may need more than just time," Daniels muttered. AJ quirked a brow. "He did things to her, AJ. Things she may never get over."

AJ could only nod in understanding. It killed him that she had been treated so badly and they hadn’t known about it until now. The sound of whimpering came from Constance’s room then.

"You should go take care of her," AJ suggested.

Daniels pursed his lips and nodded, heading into the bedroom. AJ stood in the doorway and watched as his friend pulled his little sister into his arms and began to murmur to her to quiet her. She settled down and Daniels rested his head back on the pillows, closing his eyes. AJ headed into his own room to get some sleep for the night.

Chapter 10

The next morning Constance was quiet as she dressed. Daniels went change, leaving her to dress and do her make up in peace. Once she was ready she headed out and sat down on the couch, curling her legs under her.

AJ watched her out of the corner of his eye as he sat on the other end of the couch watching TV. She hadn’t said a word to him and she sat staring off into space now.

"Connie," he said softly. "Are you all right, honey?"

She snapped out of her daze and nodded slowly. "Fine, AJ," she lied. She couldn’t help worrying about what Justin had said to her on the phone. She wouldn’t be able to live with herself if any harm came to her brother or her friends.

"Connie, could I speak to you a moment in private," Daniels called from his and AJ’s room.

Without a word Constance stood and headed into the room. Daniels closed the door and faced his sister.

"I don’t want any argument from you. AJ and I need to go to the gym and do an autograph show today. I’m not leaving you alone here all day while we’re gone."

"I won’t argue," she replied. "I don’t think I can handle being alone after last night."

Instinctively Daniels reached out, pulling her into his arms.

"I’ll do whatever you want me to," she said, her voice muffled by his chest. "I don’t want to go back to Justin, but I don’t want anything to happen to you or AJ and any of the others."

"He won’t do anything to us," Daniels promised. "You have to believe me when I say that, Connie. We know how to take care of ourselves." She nodded, sniffling. "Go get your shoes on."

She wiped her eyes and headed out of the room to do as her brother told her.

"She gonna be all right," AJ asked when Daniels came out of the room and sat down on the couch, pulling on his sneakers.

"I honestly don’t know," he replied. "She may never be, AJ. One thing I do know for certain is that Justin will die if he dares to lay a hand on her ever again."

"We won’t let that happen," AJ reassured him, remembering the promise Daniels had made to his sister.

"Chris," Constance said coming out of her room. "I was just thinking…instead of going with you guys to the gym maybe I could go hang out with Traci. Some girl time would do me some good."

Daniels opened his mouth to protest, but AJ answered for him. "I think that’d be a really good idea." Daniels glared at him. "It’s better than her hangin’ around a smelly old gym, Chris!"

Daniels sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Fine. Go next door and see if Traci has any plans."

Constance smiled for the first time that day and headed to the room next door. She knocked and waited for someone to answer.

"Connie," Frankie greeted her, surprised to see her.

"Hi, Frankie. Is Traci in?"

"Yeah, come on in," he said ushering her inside. "Hon, Connie’s here."

Traci poked her head out of the bathroom, hair dryer in hand. "Hey!" She set the hair dryer down and ran to hug her friend. "How are you today, sweetie?"

"Better," she lied. "Do you have any plans today? Chris and AJ are heading to the gym and I really don’t feel like tagging along."

"Perfect! I was planning on meeting a couple of the girls for brunch and then maybe a movie."

"Hey, Connie, have the guys left yet," Frankie asked grabbing his bag.

"Not yet."

"Good. I’m gonna see if I can hitch a ride with them." He gave Traci a quick kiss and headed toward the door before turning back to the women. "I’ll let Chris know you’ll be with Traci."

"Thanks," Constance called as he left. She turned back to Traci a smile on her face. "You two are so cute together. It’s nice to know that not all men are douchebags."

Before Traci could respond there was a knock at the door. "That must be Taylor and Jess." She answered the door and was surprised to find Joe there. "Joe?"

"Could I talk to Connie a moment, Traci. I know you ladies have plans," he asked, peering into the room.

"Hey, Joe," Constance said coming to the door. Traci stepped away to let them talk in private.

"You all right," Joe asked. Constance nodded, smiling. "I was really worried about you last night."

"That’s sweet of you, Joe."

"Well, I’ll let you ladies do..whatever it is that you were going to do. I just wanted to check on you." He gave her a quick hug before leaving.

"What a big teddy bear," Traci smiled when Constance closed the door. "I think someone likes you."

"Joe’s just a friend," Constance chuckled.

There was a knock on the door then and Constance opened the door. Taylor Wilde and ODB were chattering away excitedly. Both women looked at Constance curiously, sure that they had Traci’s room.

"Hey girls," Traci chirped. "Have you two met Connie? This is Christopher Daniels’ baby sister."

"Holy shit," ODB exclaimed. "Baldy’s got a sister?" She eyed Constance up and down and smiled. "And she’s a looker. What’s with the cast?"

"Jess, how about we just go have brunch and see a movie," Traci said. "Connie doesn’t need you grilling her or creeping her out."

"Yeah, ya letch," Taylor teased. ODB flipped her off. "Don’t mind Jess," she said to Constance. "She’s a bit…gruff, but she’s a sweetheart once you get to know her."

"Kay," Constance said unsure of what she had just gotten herself into.

"Don’t worry, kid," ODB said slinging her arm around Constance’s shoulders and giving her a little squeeze. "You’re in good hands with us."

"That’s what she’s worried about," Traci teased.

"Don’t scare the kid off," ODB hissed. "She’s too cute to lose."

"You’re a little crazy, aren’t you," Constance asked with a chuckle.

"You have no idea," Taylor giggled. "We’re gonna have so much fun, girl."

"Ooh! Shopping," Traci exclaimed, pulling her keys out of her purse. "We have to take Connie shopping."

"Makeover," Taylor chimed in.

Constance whimpered and ODB guffawed. "I don’t think Connie is as excited about shopping as you girls." She gave Constance another squeeze. "Don’t worry, sweetcheeks, if they get out of line I’ll knock ‘em out and we can make an escape."

Constance couldn’t help laughing. "I think you and I are going to be great friends." ODB smiled wide as they headed toward Traci’s car.

None of the ladies saw the man watching them from a distance. Justin Mulwray smirked seeing his girlfriend with the small group of women. Once he had found out that Constance’s brother was a wrestler for TNA it had taken him no time to find out where they would be for their house shows.

He was half out of his mind on caffeine and various drugs he had consumed. His mind raced as he thought of ways to punish her for not obeying him. Snapping out of his thoughts when he heard loud laughing he turned his attention back to the women.

The two smaller ones he was sure he could handle with no problem. They’d probably crumple with one punch. The larger of the women looked to be more of a challenge. Though he wanted Constance back he’d bide his time and wait until he could get her alone.

"Soon, Connie," he murmured to himself. "Soon you’ll be back where you belong." Giving them one last look he headed back to his car to sleep.

Chapter 11

The ladies had gone to a restaurant near the mall where they could sit outside and enjoy the sun. Taylor, Traci and ODB happily chattered away. As she sat with the ladies Constance was very much aware of the drastic differences between herself and the ladies.

She glanced at Taylor. The pretty blonde had on a pale purple sundress that hit her at about mid-thigh. The exposed skin was perfectly tanned and unmarred by angry bruising.

Constance turned her attention to Traci. The brunette looked very class in a pair of black dress pants and a sleeveless royal blue button down shirt. Once again the exposed flesh was unmarred.

ODB on the other hand was tattooed and wearing her favorite pair of denim short shorts with a top that looked barely big enough to fit over her ample chest. She was the polar opposite of her friends, but that didn’t stop them from hanging out and having a blast.

She couldn’t help feeling a disconnect with these women. They didn’t have a worry in the world. She had the weight of the world on her shoulders.

Feeling someone’s hand on her shoulder snapped her out of her thoughts. Turning her attention toward the person she saw Traci’s concerned face.

"You all right," she asked.

"Fine," Constance replied. "Just thinking."

"We’re going to do a little shopping before the movie. Come on," Traci replied smiling. "Some new things will take your mind off of your troubles."

She walked ahead with Taylor. ODB stayed behind and slung her arm around Constance’s shoulders. She had only known her for a short time, but something about Daniels’ little sister made her appoint herself her personal protector.

"So, your boyfriend beat ya pretty bad, huh," ODB asked as they followed Traci and Taylor.

"Is it that obvious," Constance grimaced.

"To someone who’s been there and done that," ODB nodded and gave her a little squeeze. "Don’t worry, honey, things get better. The best thing you could have done was leave his sorry ass. Anyone messes with ya and he’ll have to answer me."

"And AJ and Joe and Chris and the list goes on and on," Constance smiled. "Thanks, Jess. I appreciate you having my back."

"Us girls gotta stick together," ODB replied and winked at her. "Now, let’s get some new fancy duds for you before we go suffer through some sappy chick flick."

Constance couldn’t help laughing. ODB had a way of making her smile without even really trying. It was just in her nature to be funny.

Taylor and Traci glanced back at the two when they heard Constance laughing. Both women smiled.

"Your friend seems to have warmed up to Jess," Taylor commented.

"She’ll warm up to you too Taylor," Traci replied. "She’s been through a pretty rough patch." Taylor arched a brow at her. "You can not breathe a word of this to anyone." Taylor nodded and listened as Traci explain what had been going on with Constance.

When Traci was done talking Taylor hung back and wrapped her arms around Constance. "You poor thing," she said as she hugged her.

Constance looked to Traci, who gave her an apologetic look. "You just couldn’t keep your mouth shut, could you?" Traci shrugged. "It’s all right, I guess."

"Oh don’t be mad at her," Taylor begged. "Something like this is bound to come out in the locker room sooner or later. I just want you to know that you’ve got support from me any time you need it."

"Thanks, Taylor," Constance said finally returning the hug. "So, did someone say something about shopping?"

"Absolutely," Traci chuckled slinging her arm around Taylor’s shoulders. "To the sales!"

AJ, Frankie and Joe stood off to the side watching as Daniels pummeled the punching bag. At one point he hit it so hard that he nearly snapped the chain suspending it from the ceiling. All of his pent up aggression was finally coming out.

"Chris, maybe you should…go work off your aggressions some other way," AJ suggested.

"Like the treadmill or the…" Frankie was cut off when Daniels let out a loud cry, punching the bag one last time as he cursed up a storm.

"Chris," Joe called jogging over to him. Daniels was pacing back and forth, clearly still agitated. "You need to cool off, man." Daniels glared at him. "I get it. Chris, I really do get it. I hate what this prick did too, but keeping it bottled up until you snap like you just did isn’t going to help Connie. Remember that your goal is to help Connie."

"You’re right, Joe," Daniels panted, doubling over to catch his breath. "How can you stay so calm?"

Joe smiled. "Because I’m saving my pent up anger for someone special."

"You really think Justin will…" He was cut short by Joe nodding.

"And just so you know I’m prepared for the fucker."

"Let’s finish up here," Daniels sighed. "I don’t like the idea of Connie being out without protection."

@

"Come on out, Connie," Taylor called over the stall door.

Inside the changing stall Constance was gazing at her reflection. The make up had done wonders at hiding the fading bruises on her face. She was not able to cover up the bruises marring her arms and shoulders and legs.

The dress that Taylor had picked out for her hugged her body in all the right places. Unfortunately it also exposed her arms and legs.

"I think I’ll just change into my own clothes," she called back to a chorus of groans.

"Connie, ya might as well just come out. The Boobsie Twins aren’t gonna leave ya alone," ODB called.

"Come on out, sweetie," Traci said trying the knob.

Constance poked her head out. "I just don’t think this is the right time to be trying on clothes, Traci."

"Honey," Traci began and then noticed the bruises. "Maybe this dress isn’t right for you. Hang on a second."

She headed over to the racks and pulled off a long sleeved pale yellow V-neck shirt and a pair of black jeans. She brought them back to the changing room.

"Try these on," she said handing them through the cracked door.

With a sigh Constance took the clothes and changed into them. She had to admit that she liked Traci’s taste. The outfit did cover up everything she didn’t want the ladies to see.

"Ready for me," she called before coming out of the changing stall.

"Nice," ODB smiled.

"I still like the dress I picked out," Taylor pouted. Traci nudged her. "But you look beautiful."

"The dress was very nice, Taylor," Constance said and pulled up the sleeve on the arm that didn’t have a cast. "As soon as these go away I’ll let you dress me any way you want."

"Oh no," ODB guffawed. "You’re asking for trouble with that!"

"Shut up, Jess," Taylor huffed. She smiled at Constance. "I understand and I’m holdin’ ya to it."

Constance smiled and turned toward the full length mirror. As she was fixing her hair behind her ears she gasped and spun around, scanning the mall outside the glass front of the store.

"What is it," Traci asked, alarmed by her friend’s reaction.

"I saw him," Constance whispered, trembling. "Justin’s here."

Traci glanced around, but had no idea who she was looking for. She had never seen Justin.

"I’m sure you’re just seeing things, Connie. Come on. Change back into your clothes and I’ll get this outfit for you," she said glancing at her watch. "The movie starts soon."

Constance headed back into the changing stall. Traci turned to ODB and Taylor. She didn’t know what to do.

"If this jackoff is here I’ll make him think twice about touching Connie," ODB said.

"He’s got no problem hitting women, Jess," Taylor commented.

"And I got no problem castrating fuckers with my bare hands," ODB smirked. "I’d say it’ll be an even fight."

"Only you, Jess," Traci chuckled, shaking her head.

When Constance came out of the changing stall they paid for their purchases and headed off toward the movie theater. Constance glanced around her as she stuck close to ODB’s side. She knew she saw Justin. She just knew it.

Keeping a close distance from the group of women Justin smiled. He’d gotten a little careless and allowed Constance to see him. He wouldn’t make that mistake twice. He followed them to the theater, but opted not to go inside when he saw what movie they were going to see. He’d keep an eye on her on the way back to the hotel.

Constance took a seat between Traci and ODB and reclined back in her seat. She couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling. If Justin was there it was just a matter of time before he found her. The thought of her punishment for leaving made her shudder. ODB felt this and wrapped an arm around her shoulders.

"Relax, honey," she whispered. "You’re safe."

Constance sighed and nodded. "For now."

Chapter 12

Later that night Constance accompanied Daniels and AJ to the house show. She didn’t put up a fight when her brother told her it was time to go. Seeing or thinking that she saw Justin at the mall had shaken her up and she didn’t want to be alone if he was really in town.

She was sitting with Traci in the catering area when Daffney plopped down next to her, slinging her arm around Constance’s shoulders. Traci had introduced her to some of the women there, but having just met Daffney the gesture was unexpected.

"So, what were we talking about," Daffney asked, twirling her hair around her finger. "Oh right! So, there I was pounding on Taylor’s bleached blonde ass…"

"Why would you pound on Taylor," Constance asked thoroughly confused by the conversation already.

"Oh yeah, you weren’t around for that," Daffney smiled. The smile was nearly maniacal and Constance felt herself wanting to switch seats with Traci very badly.

"Daff, don’t you have a match to get ready for," Traci asked sensing her friend’s trepidation.

"In a minute," Daffney replied. "I’m talking to Connie, Traci." She turned her gaze back to Constance. "So, where was I? Oh yeah, so Taylor and this bitch Roxxi…who’s gone now THANK GOD…they hired me to play Governor Sarah Palin to trick those dumb ass bitches Velvet Sky and Angelina Love…I tell ya those are some stripper names if I’ve ever heard any…"

"Roxxi’s gone," Constance asked Traci. She’d been away a while, but Roxxi had been one of her friends and she had been meaning to ask where she was.

"It’s a long story," Traci sighed. She too missed the former Voodoo Queen.

"Anyway," Daffney cut in. "I tricked those bitches and what do I get in return? They cut my hair! So, Taylor has to pay. Simple as that."

"I’m so confused," Constance groaned looking from Daffney to Traci and back to Daffney again.

"I know! Isn’t it great," Daffney giggled.

"Daff, you’re scaring Connie. Just so you know," Traci sighed.

"Relax, Trace. Connie and I are gonna be best pals," Daffney smiled. "Right, Con Con? I can call you Con Con, right? Please say yes!"

"Are you always this random," Constance asked, shaking her head.

"Only as long as she’s awake," Traci muttered, which earned a smack from the raven haired Knockout. "OW! Kidding!"

"I’m just trying to lighten the mood a little," Daffney explained to Constance. "So, Con Con?"

"Sure," Constance sighed.

"YAY!" Daffney jumped up, dragging Constance with her and hugged her tightly. Constance groaned feeling it in her still aching ribs.

"Daffney, match. Now," Traci ordered. Daffney released Constance and saluted Traci before marching off for her match. "Why did we have to hire the frigging crackpot?"

"She’s just spirited," Constance chuckled, rubbing her side. "And strong." She grimaced as she sat down. Traci opened her mouth to ask if she was all right and Constance waved her off. "I’m fine and if I have to hear one more person ask me that I think I might scream."

Traci chuckled. "We’re just worried about you."

"I know," Constance smiled. "I’m glad I have so many friends. I really need them more than ever now."

Traci wrapped an arm around her shoulders and pulled her close for a hug. "Don’t ever forget that we’re here for you, honey."

Down the hall Steiner was watching the exchange between the women. He was pleasantly surprised to see Constance following AJ and Daniels into the arena that night. He hadn’t been looking forward to seeing the same old faces, but she certainly brightened his night.

Now if only Constance and that Traci chick would kiss. He smiled to himself at the thought. He could go for some HLA right about now.

"Earth to Scotty," he heard and snapped out of his daze.

Tearing his attention away from the women Steiner looked up at Kevin Nash. "What?"

"I said our match is up soon," Nash smirked. "Your head is off in the clouds, brother!"

"Come on," Steiner muttered stalking off. He didn’t feel like being interrogated by Nash.

Nash glanced in the direction that Steiner had been so transfixed on and sighed. He was either staring at Traci or Constance. Either way it spelled trouble. He made a mental note to speak to Kurt about it and followed Steiner down to the Main Even Mafia’s locker room.

@

Justin stood outside the arena. He held a single ticket to the show in his hand. He wanted to get Constance, but before he did that he wanted to check out what her brother did for a living. He knew it’d probably be a lot of gay men groping one another, but he could use a laugh.

He stubbed out the cigarette he’d been smoking and headed inside to find his seat. He had wanted to sit front row, but since Daniels and his friend had seen what he looked like he knew they’d alert Constance had they seen him. That would spoil his surprise.

@

"Hey, Kurt, you got a minute," Nash asked later when Steiner had left the locker room to grab some water.

"Sure, Kev. What’s up?" Angle set aside his tape and looked up at the taller man.

"I’m worried about Scotty," Nash replied. Angle looked puzzled. "You haven’t noticed him acting strange?"

"Strange? This is Scott Steiner we’re talking about," Angle replied with a chuckle. "I barely understand him when he talks. You expect me to understand his actions?"

"I just don’t like the way he’s been staring at Connie Daniels," Nash finally blurted out. "I think we need to keep an eye on him. Maybe let Stinger and Book know to keep an eye on him too."

"Kev, we both know that Connie’s been through some things lately," Angle sighed. Daniels had confided in Angle, Nash and Sting finally about what was going on with his sister. "I think you’re kicking into surrogate father mode and overreacting to how Scott’s acting."

"Whatever, Kurt," Nash rumbled. "I’m keeping my eye on Scott from now on. The last thing Connie needs is more drama."

"I couldn’t agree more," Angle nodded. "Right now Scott’s only looking. As long as he doesn’t act everything will be fine." With that Angle stood and headed out of the locker room.

"I hope you’re right, Kurt," Nash sighed, raking a hand through his hair.

@

Justin couldn’t help humming as he walked along the halls of the arena. The show had been quite entertaining. He could certainly see why so many people enjoyed watching wrestling. It hadn’t been the gay lovefest he had expected it to be.

Once the show was over he had managed to slip to the back without being detected by security. Now it was just a matter of finding Constance. He knew that she would be with the talent. She had friends in the business thanks to her brother.

He heard the sounds of voices up ahead and smiled wider. He knew he was getting closer to where he wanted to be. Carefully he crept along, keeping a lookout for Daniels and AJ. If they spotted him it’d be all over.

"Come on, Connie, please," he heard someone begging. It was a male and that made Justin’s blood boil.

"Chris, I said no," Constance laughed. "I don’t want you to braid my hair."

"But you’ll look so cute," another voice whined.

"Alex, the answer is no," Constance replied.

"You’d let Taylor do it," the one addressed as Chris said. Justin could hear the pout in his voice and shook his head. How gay could you get?

"Taylor knows what she’s doing," Constance snickered. "At least if Taylor braided my hair I know I’d look good. With you jokers I’d wind up looking like Pipi Longstockings or worse!"

"Fine! Be that way!"

"Yeah!"

Justin could hear the sound of feet storming away. He peeked around the corner and saw Constance just sitting down at a table in what he assumed was the catering area. She was alone. Perfect.

He crept over to the table and leaned on it gently. "Hey there, Connie," he said softly.

She bolted from the table, spinning around and fixing him with terror filled wide eyed. "How’d you get back here," she squeaked.

Justin sauntered around the table and shrugged his smile firmly in place. He had her right where he wanted her. "Security in this joint leaves a lot to be desired."

Constance glanced around frantically. Everything was a blur. In her terror she couldn’t make out any familiar faces. She wanted desperately to scream, but she found her mouth dry and a hard lump forming in her throat.

"Scream if you want, baby," Justin smirked. "I doubt anyone will hear you over all this noise."

The ring was being broken down and workers were milling about collecting items to be shipped off to the next destination. Their murmur was getting louder with each passing minute.

Constance’s heart thudded in her chest. She was trying desperately to block out Justin’s words, but it was hard. A cold sweat broke out over her brow as he inched closer to her. She felt a faint coming over her and fought desperately to hold onto consciousness, knowing if she collapsed Justin would collect her and disappear.

Her back hit a wall and she squeezed her eyes shut. She could practically feel Justin on top of her now. It wouldn’t be long before she could feel his hot breath on her face.

Before that could happen she heard the sound of someone yelling. In her panicked state she couldn’t make out who it was and before long she had slid down to the ground, her head slumping forward onto her chest. Her hysteria had caused her to black out.

Chapter 13

Steiner had been leaving the Main Event Mafia locker room when he saw Constance backing away from some guy. From the look on her face he could tell she was terrified of this man. He could see that the guy had evil intentions with her. When he saw her back hit the wall and moments later Constance slumped to the ground he knew he had to act.

Dropping his bag he headed in the direction of the two. "HEY! What are you doin’?"

Justin was about to kneel down in front of Constance when he heard the yelling. Turning his attention away from his target he spotted Steiner heading his way. He stood, preparing to fight.

"Who the hell are you," Steiner demanded.

"I’m her boyfriend," Justin replied.

"Boyfriend? You responsible for her broken arm," Steiner demanded, cracking his knuckles.

"He sure is, Scotty," came Joe’s voice. He was carrying his large Samoan blade in his belt loop. "I believe you and I have some business to handle, Justin."

"Who the fuck are you," Justin demanded rounding on the Samoan.

Joe smiled and in a flash pulled the knife from his belt and hooked the end onto Justin’s shirt and pulled him close. "You hurt Connie," Joe growled.

"Get the fuck away from me with that thing," Justin yelled, clawing at the neck of his shirt. Joe twisted the knife causing the material to tighten around his neck.

"You feel like a big man beating on women," Joe asked as he tugged Justin behind him.

Steiner watched as Joe walked out of the arena with Justin like a dog on a leash. He turned his attention toward Constance’s unconscious form on the ground. He could hear footsteps and saw AJ and Sabin running down the hall toward him.

"What happened," AJ asked seeing Constance passed out on the ground.

"Some guy showed up and she passed out," Steiner replied. "Joe dragged him outside. I think he called him Justin. He had that big ass knife."

"Shit," AJ groaned. "Sabin, go get Chris." Sabin nodded and took off down the hall. AJ looked at Constance and then toward where he knew Joe must have gone. He was torn between staying to make sure she was all right and going to prevent Joe from going to jail.

"Go," Steiner said. "I’ll make sure Connie’s all right."

"Thanks," AJ called as he took off out of the building.

Once he was alone again with Constance Steiner stooped down and picked her up, carefully cradling her. He trailed his fingers down the side of her face, not liking the make up that coated it heavily. Steiner turned to take her back to the Main Event Mafia locker room and found Nash standing there. The Mafia had heard the yelling. Nash was the first one out to check on it.

"Her boyfriend showed up," Nash asked. Steiner nodded. "Joe’s handling him?" Again Steiner nodded. "Good. I’ll take her, Scott."

"I got her," Steiner replied, not willing to let her go.

"Let Kevin take her, Scott," Sting said. Steiner turned and saw Sting, Sharmell and Booker standing there. Angle had gone to see where Joe had taken Justin.

Reluctantly Steiner handed Constance over to Nash.

"Come on, Kev," Sting said. "Let’s get her settled in the locker room."

"I’ll go see if I can find her brother," Booker said. "Baby, you stay with her in case she wakes up. She’ll be scared." Sharmell nodded and followed Nash and Sting back to the Main Event locker room.

As the group dispersed Steiner watched Sting, Nash and Sharmell walk away with Constance. His eyes burned holes in their backs. He had wanted to be the person that she saw when she woke up. It’s not like he would have done anything to her while she was unconscious. He preferred his women a little more lively than that. Shaking his head he walked away to cool off.

When AJ made it outside he found Joe holding Justin with the knife handle across his neck. Justin was on the ground in front of him on his knees gasping for air.

"Joe," AJ called jogging over to the two. When he got close he could see that Justin’s left eye was already swollen shut. Blood trickled from his forehead and nose.

"You like to beat on women," Joe was growling as he continued to choke him out. "How do you like being beaten like a little bitch?"

"Joe! Don’t kill him! You’ll go to jail," AJ exclaimed. He knew better than to try to physically restrain the angry Samoan. Joe was liable to lash out at him if he did.

Joe released Justin, who fell to the ground sputtering and holding his neck. He was breathing heavily as she walked a bit away from him. AJ could see that it took a lot of self restraint for him to do this.

"The bitch deserved it," Justin coughed as he sat up on his knees. "She’s mine!" He spit out blood. "She didn’t get permission to leave!"

Joe rounded on him, his eyes shooting fiery daggers at Justin. He crossed the distance between them in two steps and hooked his knife into Justin’s mouth like a fish hook.

"Listen to me, asshole," Joe growled, his face just inches from Justin’s. "Connie is NOT yours. She NEVER was yours. Do you understand?"

Justin whimpered feeling the hook end of the blade digging into his cheek and nodded.

"You’re going to leave here now and never bother her again," Joe continued. "Do I make myself clear?"

Again Justin whimpered and nodded as Joe dug the blade in just deep enough to draw a little bit of blood.

"Get the fuck out of my face," Joe growled, hauling Justin to his feet and tossing him away from the building.

Angle made it out just as Justin scrambled to his feet and ran away.

"Was that Justin," he asked AJ and Joe.

"Yes and he shouldn’t be bothering Connie anymore," Joe said flexing his hand and wincing. The knuckles had already begun to swell."

"We should get you some ice for that hand," Angle said.

"Later. I need to see how Connie’s doing."

"Kev and Steve brought her to our locker room," Angle replied following Joe and AJ into the building. He looked at AJ and leaned in whispering, "Do you really think this is over now?"

"You didn’t see him, Kurt. Joe was a man possessed. I don’t think Justin wants to face that again," AJ replied. Angle nodded knowing the Samoan’s temper.

"CONNIE," Daniels called frantically as he raced down the hall. Sabin had only managed to get out the name Justin before a feeling of dread took over and he was on autopilot. "CONNIE!"

"Chris," Booker called nearly colliding with the shorter man. "Relax. She’s safe. Kev and Steve have her in our locker room. Sharmell is with them too."

Daniels breathed a sigh of relief, leaning against the wall as he caught his breath. "Thank God. Justin?"

"Last I heard Joe was dealing with him."

Daniels couldn’t help the smile that crossed his lips. He hoped that Joe hurt him in the worst way. All the terror that Justin had caused his sister he deserved a slow painful death. His only regret is that he couldn’t be there to help.

"I should check on Connie."

Booker nodded and led the way to the locker room.

@

Constance could hear the sound of talking as she slowly came back up from the blackness that had enveloped her. She fluttered open her eyes and saw someone at her feet. Unable to fully focus her eyes yet she let out a yelp and fell off the couch.

"Connie," Sting called, placing a hand on her shoulder. "It’s all right, honey. You’re safe."

"No," she whimpered, pulling her knees to her chest and rocking back and forth. "Not while he’s around. I’ll never be safe." Fat tears rolled down her cheeks.

Sharmell got down on the floor with her, wrapping her arms around the younger woman. Constance was nearly hysterical as she muttered to herself about never being safe. Sharmell cast glances at Sting and Nash for help, but both men were at a loss.

"Connie," Daniels called bursting through the door. He had been in the hall talking with Booker when he heard her cry out. He was by her side, enveloping her in a tight embrace in seconds. "It’s all right."

"He never laid a hand on her," Nash said. "Scott stopped him."

"You’re safe," Daniels cooed. "He won’t hurt you anymore."

"You don’t know that," Constance sobbed.

"No, but I do," came Joe’s voice from the doorway. All eyes were on him as AJ entered the room behind him, handing him an ice pack for his hand. Angle was close behind them. "He won’t come near you again, Connie. I promise you that."

Daniels got to his feet, pulling his sister with him. "Let’s get you back to the hotel." He turned his attention to the Mafia. "Thank you. All of you. Please tell Scott thank you too."

"We will," Angle said. "Take care of her, Chris."

Joe placed a hand on Daniels’ shoulder. When he met his friend’s gaze he motioned that he wanted to hold Constance. Daniels nodded, passing her over to him. He knew that she wouldn’t object.

Joe wrapped his arms around her, kissing her temple. "Are you all right, baby girl?"

She sniffled and nodded. "Will you stay with me tonight, Joe?"

"Only if your brother says it’s all right," he replied, glancing at Daniels, who nodded. Joe smiled and held her close as they walked out of the arena ahead of Daniels and AJ.

"Chris, do you think that’s wise," AJ asked.

"Joe’s not going to try anything with Connie, AJ. He has more respect for her than that. He knows she needs a friend right now," Daniel replied.

Chapter 14

Joe watched as Constance crawled into bed when they got back to AJ and Daniels’ room. He crawled in next to her. She rested her head on his chest and curled up at his side.

"I feel safe with you, Joe," she said softly.

He wrapped his arm protectively around her, a small smile curling his lips. "I’m glad, Connie," he whispered. "I’d die before I ever let anything happen to you."

She took his hand in hers gently and looked at the swollen and reddened knuckles. "Did he put up much of a fight," she asked, running her fingers along his knuckles.

Joe laced his fingers with hers, ignoring the pain. He most likely fractured a knuckle or two. It was worth it in his eyes in order to protect someone he cared about.

"Not much," he finally replied. "Not that I gave him much of a chance to anyway." She chuckled. "Get some sleep, Connie."

Obediently she closed her eyes. It wasn’t long before he could tell she was sleeping. He too closed his eyes though sleep did not come to him so easily. He had done a number on Justin, but he’d dealt with men like him before. His pride was wounded and he’d be looking for a way to get back at Joe. He only hoped that he could be around so that Constance wouldn’t be in any danger.

Justin coughed up blood as he stared in the dirty mirror in the gas station bathroom he had wandered to. His eye was completely swollen shut. There were angry red marks around his neck. His ribs ached something terrible.

He doubled over the sink retching as he coughed up more blood. That couldn’t be good. Not good at all. The hospital was out of the question. He didn't care if he was dying.

Painfully he reached into his back pocket, pulling out a packet of white powder. He just needed enough to take the edge off his pain and then he could stumble back to his car and sleep it off.

He dipped his finger in the powder and swirled it around in his mouth. He could feel the drug taking over already. With a groan and a grimace he pushed away from the sink and stumbled out to his car. Pain radiated through his ribs and face.

Once he fell into the driver’s side of the car he dumped some of the powder out onto the back of his hand and gave it a healthy snort. A smile curled his bloody lips as he sunk back across the front seat. His pain was lessening little by little.

As he lay there he slipped into blackness. His heart gave a stutter and then stopped completely. Quietly Justin Mulwray expired at a dirty gas station broken and beaten and alone.

@

The next morning his phone ringing awakened Daniels. He fumbled on the nightstand until he found it. He checked the caller ID and didn’t recognize it.

"Hello," he asked.

"Mr. Daniels?"

"Yes."

"This is John Salem. I was the officer who handled…"

"Connie’s case," Daniels finished for him, swinging his legs over the side of the bed. "What can I do for you, officer?"

"I thought that I should let you know that you need not worry about Justin Mulwray bothering your sister anymore. He was found dead in his car at a gas station not far from the arena you were at last night."

Daniels’ stomach tightened in a knot. Joe. What had he done to Justin?

"Do you have any idea what the cause of death was," he asked, praying that his friend wouldn’t be in any kind of trouble.

"He was very battered," Salem replied and Daniels’ stomach lurched into his throat. "But the initial tox screen revealed enough drugs in his system to kill an elephant. The coroner’s best guess at this time would be an overdose."

Daniels breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank you for calling, officer."

"No problem," Salem replied. "As terrified as your sister was I thought that maybe this would ease her fear. Take care of her."

"I will," Daniels replied before hanging up. He flopped backwards across the bed, relief washing over him.

There was a knock on his door and he sat up to find AJ wiping sleep from his eyes. "Who was on the phone?"

"Officer Salem," Daniels replied a smile on his face. "He called to let me know that Justin is dead."

AJ’s eyes went wide as saucers. "You mean…Joe…"

"The coroner believes it was an overdose."

AJ sighed in relief. "Well, I suppose that’s good news."

"I have to go tell Connie," Daniels said jumping up and heading to his sister’s room.

He knocked lightly and peeked into the room. A small smile crossed his face when he saw his sister sleeping on her side. Joe had his arm draped around her waist. They were spooning. It looked so natural to him.

"Connie," he called softly. "Con, wake up please."

She stirred and looked toward the voice. "Chris? What time is it?"

"It’s early," he replied coming into the room and perching on the edge of the bed.

Joe stirred when he felt Constance shifting. "What’s going on?"

"I have wonderful news," Daniels smiled.

Joe sat up scrubbing a hand down his face. "What is it?"

"Justin won’t be bothering you anymore, Connie," Daniels smiled.

"What did you do," Constance asked, fear lacing her words.

"Not a thing. Neither did Joe."

Joe arched a brow at him. "Chris, what the hell are you babbling about?"

"Justin ODed last night. He’s gone. He won’t ever be able to hurt you again, Connie."

She sat there staring at him blankly. After living in fear of the man for so long she just didn’t know how to react. Part of her wanted to mourn the loss of life. No matter how cruel he had been she had loved him at one point in time. Another part of her wanted to dance for joy.

"He’s really gone," she asked, tears forming in her eyes. She refused to allow them to fall.

"I got a call from Officer Salem just a little while ago," Daniels nodded. "He’s gone, Connie. Never coming back."

He was surprised when she launched herself into his arms, hugging him tightly. "It’s over," she cried, tears streaming down her cheeks. "It’s finally over!"

Joe sat there soaking it all in. He didn’t know if Constance was happy or sad or both. Whatever the case may be he was happy that Justin was gone. In Joe’s opinion he was a waste of space, not worthy to breathe the same air as Constance let alone lay a hand on her.

"Chris," AJ said knocking on the door lightly. "We really need to get going."

"Right. We have to hit the road," Daniels said pulling back and looking down at his sister. He wiped a tear away with the pad of his thumb and smiled. "Everything is going to change for you now, Connie."

She smiled and nodded, sniffling. She was so relieved to not have to walk on eggshells everywhere she went now.

"I’ll let you get ready," Daniels said. "You coming, Joe?"

"I’d like to speak to Joe a minute," Constance said. Daniels nodded and headed to his own room to change and finish packing. He closed the door behind him.

Constance turned to face Joe once her brother was gone. "Thank you for staying with me last night," she said softly. "I know you didn’t have to, but you did and I’m very thankful for that."

"Of course I stayed, Connie," Joe said reaching out and taking her hands in his. He rubbed the backs of them with his thumbs. He sighed and glanced up to meet her gaze. "I have a confession to make."

"What is it?"

"I care about you, Connie," he replied. "As more than just a friend." She opened her mouth to speak, but he continued quickly before she could. "I understand that with what Justin put you through you’ll need time. I’m willing to give you all the time you need."

"Joe..I…I’m damaged goods," she said dropping her eyes to the bed. "You don’t want me."

"Who told you that," he demanded, tilting her head up so that she met his gaze once more. She shrugged. "Connie, you’re not damaged goods. Don’t ever let me hear you say that again."

"Still, Joe, you don’t want me," she said, tears shining in her eyes. "I may never be ready for…that ever again."

"Then I’ll be happy just being your friend," Joe replied. "To put it simply, Connie, you ain’t getting rid of me."

She smiled and leaned forward hugging him tightly. "Thank you," she whispered.

He hugged her back, smiling. "I’ll let you get ready before your brother blows a gasket about being late to the next show."

He slid out of bed and gathered his things giving her one last look before leaving. AJ was sitting on the couch paging through a magazine when he came out of Constance’s room.

"She all right," AJ asked.

"I think she will be," Joe replied smiling. "I’ll see you at the show, AJ."

@

Later that night Steiner was grabbing a bottle of water when he spotted Constance sitting at a table in the catering area. She was writing in a notebook. She was alone. Strange that her brother, AJ or Joe would leave her alone after what had happened the night before. He made his way over to the table.

"What’cha writin’," he asked, startling her.

Constance glanced up at him, a hand over her thudding heart. "A to do list," she replied forcing a smile. Something about him still creeped her out. "It’s Scott, right?"

Steiner chuckled and nodded. She was playing coy. He liked it.

"You all right after last night," he asked.

"A thousand times better," she replied smiling and went on to explain that Justin wouldn’t be paying her anymore surprise visits.

"That’s great news," he replied with a smile. "Well, I’ll see you around." He tipped his bottle to her and headed off. Once he was some ways down the hall he turned back so that he could watch her.

This didn’t go unnoticed by Sting or Nash. They were heading to the Mafia locker room chatting when they spotted him talking to Constance. Both men frowned at each other. They knew how Steiner could be with women. It was months before Lauren would agree to interview him alone. He’d made quite the impression on the young blonde.

"Kurt, something has to be done about Scott," Sting said entering the locker room.

"Thank you," Nash exclaimed. He had tried to reason with Kurt, but he wouldn’t listen.

"What are you talking about," Angle demanded.

"He’s been lookin’ at Connie like she’s a T-bone steak," Booker chimed in. Sharmell nodded in agreement. Even she had seen it.

Sting could see that Angle didn’t believe him and sighed, rolling his eyes. He grabbed him by the arm and dragged Angle into the hall and pointed him in the direction of where Steiner stood staring at Constance.

"Oh hell," Angle groaned. "I’ll go talk to him."

"Good idea," Sting replied. "In the meantime I think I’ll go have a word with Chris. Give him a heads up."

The men parted and Sting headed to Daniels’ locker room. He didn’t really want to have this conversation. He knew that the younger man had enough on his mind these days without adding more to his worries.

He knocked on the door and waited. Daniels answered and smiled. "Hey, Steve, what can I do for you?"

"We need to talk, Chris," Sting replied. "May I come in?"

Daniels nodded, his smile falling, and stepped aside to allow the veteran entrance.

Chapter 15

Daniels was searching the halls looking for his sister. After what Sting had just told him about Steiner he wasn’t going to take any chances. He spotted her talking to Taylor, ODB and Traci.

"Ladies," he said nodding to the other women before turning his attention to his sister. "Connie, a word?" He didn’t wait for her response as he grabbed her hand and practically dragged her down the hall.

"Chris! What the hell!"

He stopped and faced her. "I need you to stay close by me or AJ or Joe from now on," he said.

"What? Why? Justin’s dead. Starting today I am not living in fear anymore," she replied, crossing her arms across her chest.

"Connie, please," Daniels begged.

"What’s going on, Chris?"

He groaned, running a hand over his head. He could see that she was already trying to take back her life. He feared that what he was about to say would send her right back into a shell.

"Steve came by my locker room and told me that Steiner’s been…fixated on you," he finally said. "I don’t know what he’ll do, Connie. He’s a live wire. Totally unpredictable. Please just do what I told you."

"So, it wasn’t in my mind," Constance said softly. Seeing the look on her brother’s face she explained the eerie feeling she got in the diner and the feeling she continued to get whenever he was around.

"Just stay away from him, Connie," Daniels begged. "He’s bad news."

She nodded mutely. After the ordeal she’d been through she knew better than to argue anymore. Her brother was looking out for her like always.

"I’ll be careful," she promised. "But I don’t want babysitters."

"Connie," Daniels groaned.

"No arguments," she replied, her stubborn streak coming out. With that she headed back to her friends.

"Damn it," Daniels sighed, turning his eyes skyward. "Of all the times for her to be stubborn."

"Don’t worry about it, man," Booker said. He had heard the conversation between the siblings. "The rest of the Mafia’s got your back. Scotty tries anything we’ll deal with him. She’ll be fine."

"Thanks," Daniels nodded, forcing a smile. He hoped and prayed that didn’t have to happen, but in his gut he felt it would.

@

Constance had been hanging out in the Knockouts locker room for most of the show. She didn’t want to be around her brother or his friends knowing they’d be hovering around her. She loved them all, but sometimes they could smother her.

"I’ll see you later on for the girls night," Constance called to Traci and said goodbye to the others.

She hadn’t thought anything of walking back to her brother’s locker room alone, despite her brother’s warning. As she rounded the corner she collided with what felt like a stone wall. Strong hands gripped her arms before she could fall backwards.

Looking up she came face to face with Scott Steiner. The look on his face made her shudder involuntarily. She tried to pull away, but he held her tightly.

"Sorry," she said struggling to escape. "I wasn’t watching where I was going."

"S’all right, Connie," he smiled. "Accidents happen." He released one arm and ran his fingertips along the bruised side of her face. She flinched and pulled away from his touch. "So beautiful."

"Please," she begged. "Scott, don’t do anything stupid."

He smiled as he still held her by the uncasted arm. "I know you want this just as much as I do, Connie." He slid his free hand behind her back, pulling her close to him.

"No," she groaned as he crushed her body into his. "Stop it!"

With a twisted smile he backed her into the wall, dipping his head and crushing her lips with his. She pounded in his chest ineffectively as she groaned and grunted. She could feel his tongue snake out and force its way into hers.

Unable to think of anything else to do to get this large man off of her she bit down hard on his tongue, drawing blood. Steiner pulled away with a scream, but didn’t release his hold on her.

Her heart thudding in her chest Constance brought her knee up and connected with his crotch. Once again Steiner screamed in pain. He finally released her. Before she could get away he grabbed her by her hair, pulling her back and pinning her against the wall.

"NO! LET GO OF ME," she screamed.

"You wanna play it rough I got no problem with that," Steiner growled, spitting out blood.

"GET OFF ME YOU DISGUSTING SON OF A BITCH," Constance yelled, hoping someone would hear her and come to her aid.

"You prefer drug addicts and fat Samoans over me," Steiner demanded. As he slid a finger in the V-neck of her shirt. With the flick of his wrist he tore it to reveal her bra. "Now THAT’S what’s disgusting."

Constance attempted to bring her knee up once again only to find her legs pinned to the wall.

"Not gonna happen twice, sweetheart," Steiner chuckled. "I’m bigger and stronger than you."

"But you’re not really all that smart, Scotty."

Constance’s heart leapt for joy hearing Joe’s voice. She knew she was saved.

"Back off, Joe," Steiner growled. "I’ll let you have the leftovers."

"I wouldn’t plan on it, Scott," Nash called from the other end of the hall. He stood with Sting, Angle and Booker.

"Let her go, Scott," Angle said, his eyes like cold steel.

"Come on, Kurt," Steiner chuckled. "The bitch was practically throwin’ herself at me."

"I don’t think so, dickhead," Daniels growled. He had joined Joe along with AJ, Sabin, Shelley, ODB and Kong, who had taken a liking to Constance.

"You got two choices, Scotty," Sting said. "Let her go or face all of us. It’s your choice."

Steiner looked from one group to the other weighing his options. With a sigh he released Constance, holding up his hands in surrender.

"Bitch ain’t worth the trouble," he drawled.

Constance ran to her friends. ODB and Kong slung their arms around her shoulders, making sure she was all right.

Joe sauntered forward, a smile on his face. "Scotty, Scotty, Scotty." He shook his head chuckling. In a flash he had grabbed Steiner’s collar and pulled him close so that they were nose to nose. "If you EVER lay a hand on her again I promise that you will be eating through a straw." He shoved Steiner away as he went to join his group of friends again.

"Come on, Connie," ODB said. "Let’s see if Traci or Taylor have a shirt you can borrow." She pulled off her jacket and gave it to Constance to cover herself with.

Steiner straightened his shirt and turned toward the rest of the Mafia. All four men glared at him.

"Locker room. Now," Angle growled. "I think we need to have another talk." With that he headed off with the others.

Steiner watched Constance being carted away by the group and chuckled to himself. "I’ll get you yet, Connie," he murmured. "It’s just a matter of time." With that he followed the rest of the Mafia back to the locker room.
