Since however, I’m a wrestling/Undertaker person, you can guess what most of my examples are going to be.
Mary Sues tend to be beautiful/handsome characters with great personalities or not, with dark pasts that somehow come into play in the story itself.
Take my stories for instance. I tend to make the female lead a character of my own who has an interesting history wind up involved with the Undertaker. Why? Cause I fucking like the Undertaker of course!
I don’t want to have sexual relations with him… Okay, maybe if I had a chance, I might but that’s a different story. I do not want to marry him, I think he and Sara are awesome together.
I just like writing things my way.
I always thought Fan Fiction was cool because you could rewrite things, add new characters, basically tamper with a universe not your own. So people want to change the fact that the ‘Taker is married to Sara, like it never happened, and put in somebody else, who cares? That’s FF, making the impossible possible in your own little realm.
A lot of people see that OC character, or that a story starts off with an OC and click away from the story, damn, sometimes they are missing some seriously good stories.
Mary Sue stories can be good and bad. Bad in the fact that sometimes you practically read the same story over and over again. Good though because a lot of the times you get a writer who really knows what they’re doing and makes the story so incredible that you wish there was more too it.
Then sometimes your own pen name can bury you as well.
My old pen name was UndertakersWoman, not to many people liking that. I was new to the on-line FF scene and it was my e-mail so… Apparently it’s bad manners to use a name like UndertakersWoman, KanesGurl, etc. Personally, I don’t really care one way or the other, as long as you’re not out there blabbing how you’d like to knock off the Undertaker’s wife and fuck him, go ahead.
Then I was reading some things about using your own pen name as the main character, this gets knocked too apparently. I’m sorry, I like Lyonene and I also like the idea of my character resembling me in certain ways, though I assure you I’m nothing like my heroines, I’m a lot tamer for one.
Want to use yourself as a character? Go for it, it’s your damn story, again that’s why we write. To take ourselves from our lives into something completely out of our reach.
Bottom line: There’s a lot of great ficcers out there who are afraid to write anymore because they get knocked for their stories because it’s not up to "par" or just because of their pen name.
That’s bullshit. That’s like saying "I hate people who try to act gothic and punk just because they see it on television or something", so what? Life imitates art. How many people out there try to dress like their favorite Hip Hop or Rap artist? My sister Tigress for one and I love her all the same (Love ya Tig!).
Nobody has the right to knock on someone else just because they think differently. If you don’t like OC characters messing around with the main one, don’t read the story, but don’t go bashing it either, that’s just tasteless. Have some manners and keep your fingers away from the keyboard.
Hey, what do I know; I write "Mary Sues" all the time, some people like them, some people don’t. Guess what? I don’t care.
Each to their own.
