Just some basic tips.
1) Don't be afraid to ask for help. A lot of writer's and/or reader's volunteer themselves to beta. A beta reader can make a world of difference when it comes to the quality of your story.
2) Research, research, research. Wikipedia is a great tool and it should be utilized. If you're going to write about something you don't really know about, research it so you don't come off sounding stupid
